Hey there. I just took off a set of wore out BFG long trail TA's and installed some new firestone transforce AT tires. On my BFgs i ran 80 PSI per the sidewall. On the TRansforce tires i started at 80 per the sidewall. well as soon as i started driving it felt like i was all over the road, so i lowered the pressure to 60 psi and it seems to drive much better. MY question is, will the differnace in tire pressure affect my towing ability much. or anything else? the heaviset we pull with this truck is an 8600 Lb. boat.

Just curious i guess if why the tires say 80 on them and they drove horrible, but at 60 they drive good. Thanks for some advice to a tire newbie.

I noticed when running factory tires and my current Toyo tires, that when setting pressure @ 80 psi, ( with no load ) that the center tread wore out faster. Not safe on wet roads.
I now run 60 psi all around (while unloaded) and the ride is much better. I only air up the rear to 80 psi/65 front when towing 7k or higher.

Hmm, that may be a great idea. leave them at 60 unless i am pulling the load, which is only maybe 4 times a year. With the tires at 80 PSI, i jacked the truck up and set it down on pieces of paper, and the tire print were just about perfect circles.. when i let them down to 60 the turned into more of squares.

The maximum tire pressure on the sidewall is for the maximum load the tire will accomodate, so if you are not under maximum load, you do not need to run the maximum pressure. Like hmarashi, I also run Toyos, I run my front tires at around 65 psi and my rear tires between 55 and 60 psi when not loaded...this way the tread wears more evenly and lasts longer. Good luck with your new tires.

thanks for the replies. Looks like i will try it where I just set them to for a while and see how it rides. and when i do tow the big trailer i will just air the backs up a little. Thanks again. gotta love this forum

Agree with the rest. Running 55 front and 48 rear unloaded.
