: switching to synthetics

I have a 08 cc Duramax and have 8k on ticker now. My question is that I was going to replace my filter soon. But would you suggest just switching over to sythetics now? I pull over 8k on a daily basis. Also if I switch over to synthetics will this jeapordize my warranty at all or will the dealer not be able to tell? The reason I ask about that is because my truck is going back to the dealer monday for rear tail shaft leak on the transfer case and leakage at the tranny and engine and the dumb exhaust smell in the cab.

You will get a lot of opinions on this, some say as soon as possible and others say 10K or even 20k before switching.
I changed at my first oil change to Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck 5W40 and I run this all year long. Also changed to AMSOIL sever gear 75/90 in both front and rear diffs.
As for the warranty My dealer changes My oil and all I do is bring him the oil I want in it and they never says a word. The only strange thing he does is on the oil change sticker he puts Mobil 1, 15W40. He has done this since day one.

Hope this helps.

Note: this was moved from the Allison OEM forum. The question was concerning tranny fluid. MOD.

In addition to Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40, GM offers their dealer network both Mobil Delvac 1 ESP and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. These products have been independently validated to meet the industry specs they claim - there is nothing to worry about from a warranty point of view.

Not sure what the fluid spec. is for your transmisson, but as long as you use a fluid that meets or exceeds the spec. you will be okay changing it yourself. Be sure to keep receipts and record dates and mileage when changed and you will be covered. Allison calls for synthetic ATF to meet the TES-295 rating in the 1000 series transmisions, thats why I run Transynd which is made for Allison by Castrol. :D

on the nbs chevy says you can only run a dex IV in your trans and i run amsoil torque drive(just changed actualy) but tes 295 fluid is only a dexIII fluid. so if you want to stay in warranty you better run a dexVI fluid. i was told by a very knoledgable guy on here to run the torque drive over dexVI.

I was under the impression (from a few members here) that somewhere in the newest owners manuals for the NBS, there is a statement accepting the use of TES-295 fluids in lieu of DEX VI, and that would successfully address the warranty issue.

Anyone have DEFINITIVE PROOF such as a quote and page number from the manual?

Thanks guys, I guess I was leaning towards the amsoil torque drive fluid. I guess I will wait till after I get the leak from the tranny-engine fixed and also the tailshaft of the transfer case fixed or else they might try and blame the synthetics.

I've posted that information a couple of times (copied from my owners manual), use the search function.

That would be the best way to go, Amsoil Torque Drive is reverse engineered from Transynd and is very close, so you should be okay.:D
I don't know how I missed the "08 Duramax" in your first post, I was thinking it was a Dodge from reading your handle.:duh::Insane:

Ya my user name can throw a person off. After 8-9 Dodge Cummins this is my 1st Duramax. And to be honest with you guys I will probally end up gettin another cummins to do my main pulling and just use the Duramax for runaround and backup.
I will put the amsoil in the allison then cuz it sounds like others are doing it and having no problems. Also going to put amsoil in the differentials to.
Has anyone that has switched to amsoil notice it running any cooler or not? I deliver storage sheds and am pushing alot of wind and regularly see 208-218 degrees on the dash readout. And should I seriosly be thinking about a deep tranny pan too while I'm at it?

You can't go wrong with the deep pan. That was one of the first mods I did, you can get the pan from an Allison dealer near you along with the deep pan filter. Pan is about $55 and the filter is about $20. You can re-use your pan gasket. You might want to consider the transmission cooler that Mike L. sells, it will bring your trans. temp. down considerably.
