: Did I make a mistake trying to save a buck?
dieseldan723 03-09-2005, 01:46 AM Here are a few pictures of my filter change tonight. The first pic is the old filter and new filter, (napa filter # 7101), without the magnet. The second pic is the new filter with the magnet.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
I am concerned because when I removed the old filter the holes were visible with the magnet on. After putting the magnet on the new filter, you cannot see the holes. There is a small amount of clearance between the magnet and the holes however they ARE covered. I did install the new one as it is in the picture and ran the truck. No leaks, operating temp is about 160, however I have felt a bump bump thump thump when I stopped a couple of times – not every time. I lost about 1-1/2 cups of ATF. I filled up the new filter before installing it but did not add any more fluid after that. Haven’t checked the level yet. Does this all sound normal? What about the new filter and the covered holes?<o:p></o:p>
Please help, I don’t want to ruin my first diesel!!!!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/help2.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/help2.gif
Mackin 03-09-2005, 04:51 AM This has been discussed previously. The transmission people say it isn't a problem but NO ONE could explain the oil passage blockage. Many are running the white filter (SPX?)I chose to stay with the Allison spin on.
GMC-2002-Dmax 03-09-2005, 07:21 AM The top of the filter has a taper, the holes are not blocked.
I run a WIX filter and it has been fine.

Mike L. 03-09-2005, 10:09 AM The holes are not blocked, picture is deceiving because he only shows a top view. I have never had a problem with the SPX filter but have changed to the Ally red filter so there can be no argument.

dmaxalliTech 03-09-2005, 10:18 AM I, like the others havent found anything that is convincing yeah or neah, I do know that SC uses the white SPX filter in all there work and when you get a kit from them, they give you a warranty so if they thought it was an issue, they would go OEM. I personally like the OEM Allison, but would not hesitate to use the white.
dieseldan723 03-09-2005, 10:47 AM Guys, thanks for the reassurance. What about the newly felt bump thump stuff? Any ideas?
dieseldan723 03-09-2005, 11:21 AM Mike,
Thanks. I did notice a small amount of clearance between the magnet and the holes as noted in the original post, however I did not know if that would be enough flow. Thanks for the update.
OmyLLwhy 03-09-2005, 11:32 AM I had forgot about this issue and bought a napa filter also. I was thinking of taking the magnet off until I can get an allison filter. I looked at how the magnet sat on the filter from the side and still feel there is a certain amount of restriction. The only way to really tell would be to flow one on some kind of test bench.
partsguy662 03-09-2005, 11:48 AM Parent - I'm not sure why you're using part #7101...That is the spin-on filter for that saturn automatic transmissions....Part# 7701 is the filter for the allison trans...
The threads are the same on either filter.........
Mike L. 03-09-2005, 11:54 AM Life is too short to waste time testing a 10 dollar filter, and that is why I went to the red filter. The pressure going through the spin on is about 85 psi. If there is a problem you can bet the TCM will throw a code before you can blink your eyes. I have run the SPX ( white ) filter on my truck and many other trucks that are out there racing and pulling. Joe Webb at Suncoast has done the same and no problems. I suggest you switch back to the red filter when the time comes and worry about more important things, like having some fun with your truck.

I went to NAPA thinking they would have their act together! I purchased a fuel filter and the spin on filter for the Allison. This is what they gave me? Do I have any chance getting my $$$$ back? Should I just go get an OEM?
partsguy662 03-09-2005, 01:40 PM I went to NAPA thinking they would have their act together! I purchased a fuel filter and the spin on filter for the Allison. This is what they gave me? Do I have any chance getting my $$$$ back? Should I just go get an OEM?I'm a little puzzled by what happened here, but, here's my educated guess....Look at your receipt...my assumption is they billed you for a 7701 filter, then the counter guy went back to the shelf and grabbed the 7101 instead...Personally, I would probably take it back and get the right unit..It's their goof, not yours...
As far as an oem filter goes, that's your choice...Personally, I have no issue with the wix/napa filters....But, as mike said, if it will ease your mind, go get an oem unit...
Dmax Tim 03-10-2005, 07:00 AM Look at the pic, u get 2 more holes w/ the napa/wix filter.
I noticed this the first time I changed my filter.
dieseldan723 03-11-2005, 11:53 PM Picked up new (correct) filter from NAPA tonight. They told me to bring the old (incorrect) one back and the would refund my money. Will change it out tomorrow.
