Need to ID the headgskets to order new ones. The dealer isn't real familiar with ordering them and wants to know which ones to order. A,B,C or D. I understand that some just use the "C" in all motors, but how do you determine which one to order?
thanks

You have to basically pull the old ones out. There will be a data tag on each one with a special cut-out in it that ID's the gasket.
You can do this with out removing the heads however you will have to remove a great deal of engine components to get in deep enough to see the tags. (they stick out between the heads and block) On one side it will be at the front of the head, on the other side; stuck in back against the firewall.
I suggest going to your local auto parts store and get the ALL Data on head gasket replacement, it will describe to you which gasket to order based on the pattern of the cut-out.

I thought that I had read that somewhere, but the friend of mine that is doing the job said there was no numbers, tags or anything else on them. Maybe he needs new beer goggles. Thanks for the answer.

grade A has no holes, B one hole and C has two holes at the end of the gasket visable if you remove the a/c braket, D grade is for oversize bore

Merchant told me a year ago he only stocks the thickest and runs it. Stocking and messing with the different ones can be a pain. I rebuilt mine with OEM specs cause i am an anal engineer. Please note: the new gasket is a better design and the torque of the bolts did go down from the original LB7 motors.

Do as you and your build see fit though...
