I have the Auto Tap program with the GM enhacements. It works with a windows laptop. Has anyone ever used this program to time the IP?

The big question about the AutoTap program is wether or not it is giving me correct information. I can clear the trouble codes with the program and read just about every sensor on the car. The program does not have an activate time set function. Does this mean it can't be used to set the timing and offset?

Right, that program apparently cannot be used to command the Time Set function, just to display data and assist in that way with timing the injection pump. What is your TDC Offset right now? Do you have any trouble codes??

What does it display for Des\Act, and TDCO?

I am interested in this answer as well. I am trying to decide if I want to spend the money on AutoTap, or go with OBD-2 Vehicle Explorer for reading codes/diagnostics.

Get a load of this, right now with the timing @ 12.5 degrees advanced, the AutoTap program reads my offset as 5473 degrees advance. I don't get it either. This is one reason I'm questioning whether or not I am getting a good reading. When I finally get the pump turning tool, I'll set the pump to 3.5 degrees advance and see if the offset changes when I command the PCM to reset the offset. Oh, one code, the 2016 timeing circuit one. Expected.

AutoTap with the GM package displays Act. timimg, Dis. timing and offset plus every other sensor read out in the truck. I'm just not sure of the timing readings accuracy.

It's reading TDCO, as does MT2500, at +5.473 deg.

If AutoTap and MT2500 agree at +12.5deg Des\Act, you can reset the IP.

Also, at +12.5deg, appears like someone advanced the IP 2/16ths", rather than 2mm.

If MT2500 and AutoTap agree on +12.5deg Des\Act, you can reset the IP.

We can assume that setting is too far advanced by +4deg.

Get your new tool, engine above 180deg optemp, rotate the IP to passenger-side 1/16th", one-nut lock it.

Do OBDII TDCOL procedure, crank it, then check Des\Act - should be +8.5deg, and real TDCO should be around -1.5deg, whatever your MT and Autotap read.

Increasing evidence suggests that TIME SET is a leftover from OBDI, carried over to allow adj of OBDI Inj Pump and PCM with TechII.

As observed -

In OBDI, TIME SET retards Optic Sensor to full travel, reads position of Inj Pump\distributor relative to CPS, determining basic timing by counting slots on Encoder Disk.
In OBDI, TDCOL retards Optic Sensor to full travel, reads position of Inj Pump\distributor relative to CPS, determining basic timing by counting slots on Encoder Disk.

After TIME SET and TDCOL, PCM resumes operation, with new timing values displayed.

InOBDII, TDCO retards Optic Sensor to full travel, reads position of Inj Pump\distributor relative to CPS, determining basic timing by counting slots on Encoder Disk.

When new TDCO 'learns', PCM resumes normal operation, indicating Inj Pump physical advance BTDC, and TDCO values.

OBDII can be easily adjusted if current Base timing is scanned and known, for reference.

Never assume the Inj Pump is at oem +3.5deg - scan, it first.

Based on this information, I think I will be putting my money to AutoTap. Anyone interested if I would start a thread for a group purchase? We might be able to get a good discount. I know the ImpalaSS guys have done that.

So, which, if any of these will work for us OBD-I out in the cold guys? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif

Seems like they're wanting our OBDI trucks to just fade to black (smoke)...............;) .

Before anyone commits, TurbineDoc should verify the few MT2500 points, as he uses that stick.

Suggest you read posts on other Diesel forum, May want to reconsider which
program, I think the auto enginuity does " diagnostic Writes "
