: Spin-on Filter (Help!)
ChevOMax 03-08-2005, 03:16 PM I had my first engine oil and filter change (3,000 miles).
1. When should I change out my tranny spin-on filter?
2. When I change out the spin-on tranny filter do I have to add transmission
fluid to the filter prior to installing?
3. Is there anything special I need to do when changing out the tranny filter?
Thanks
ratlover 03-08-2005, 03:21 PM 1 Change it now
2 I would, then you dont need to top off the truck but I would still get it up to temp and check the level to make sure GM filled it right
3 Dont forget about the magnet on top of the filter
robbdmax 03-08-2005, 03:28 PM I'm changing mine this weekend (just under 6K). It seems most people say to change it at 5K. As ratlover said, just fill up the filter and check the level when it gets up to temp.
ChevOMax 03-08-2005, 03:54 PM 1. What about the magnet, I don't understand?
2. What type of tranny fluid should I use?
Thanks

ratlover 03-08-2005, 04:08 PM There will be a doughnut shapped magnet on the top inside of the filter. Take it off the filter, clean it and reinstall.
A dextron 3 compatible fluid
BlackSSmoke 03-09-2005, 01:10 PM you know what? when I did my tranny oil change, I changed my filter as well, but I ofrgot to put that little magnet back on.... Is that so bad till the next tranny oil change?
BK Tool 03-09-2005, 01:12 PM If you still have it, spin the filter off, insert magnet, spin the filter back on!
WAskier 03-09-2005, 01:19 PM Make sure you have a filter wrench that fits the spin on filter, I think a gorilla put mine on in the factory. After many choice words I finally got it off but man that thing was on there!
BlackSSmoke 03-15-2005, 08:08 AM is it gonna waste any oil tranny when I take the tranny filter out?
ratlover 03-15-2005, 09:56 AM the spin on yes......just the amount that would take to fill it. It really dosnt pee much outa the trans after you remove the filter.
Your going to go through a bunch more if you mean the internal...... I cant remember what the stock pan holds Q wise:o:
SS12RACING 03-15-2005, 02:06 PM Where is the best place to get a new spin on filter? I called a local dealer here in Indianapolis and they wanted $21.95. I have read on here about going to an Allison dealer, but I'm not sure about how to find one and get one for $9 .
btfarm 03-16-2005, 01:41 PM lubricationspecialistllc.com (http://lubricationspecialistllc.com/) $10:deal: While you're there getcha' a Fumoto valve so you don't piss oil all over your skid plate.
OOps! Make that $12.75 Still a Deal over GM...
SS12RACING 03-16-2005, 02:58 PM Thanks btfarm.
I also called a local tranny shop that is a Allison Transmission specialist and they cant sell it any cheaper than a dealer sells them for..
DavesDmax 03-16-2005, 08:20 PM SS12,
You have to go to an ALLISON service center.
I paid $8.56 each at the regional service center.
DURAPONTIMAX 03-16-2005, 11:09 PM DAVESDMAX is correct. The stealer here wanted $26. I called the auto parts store and they wanted $17.80. I called the Allison service center $7.98 with tax. Thats $18 in my pocket.:ro)
snowsdog 03-18-2005, 10:06 AM I just bought 4 at an Allison service center $6.80 each, I got scr@#%$#ed by the dealer on the first one. Also the Allison center here carries the Mobil DelVac Motor oil many have been looking for but says its hard to find, they said it is a stock item at all their servce centers. $6.99 a gallon.:ro)
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 11:14 AM how do you locate an Allison service center?
anybody know if there is one close to D.C.? or would it be easier to order one of those spin on filter through the mail?
DavesDmax 03-22-2005, 04:32 PM ssduramax,
Here's one 10 miles from city center. I found it using the sales locator on the Allison transmission web site.
