: Daytime running light woes
qwikernu 03-08-2005, 02:00 AM Every time I'm on the road I see another chevy pickup with a burned out running light. How cheap are these people I thought?:grd: Well now I can join the crowd. So I go to replace the offending passenger side bulb (like I've seen on all others), and the bulb is fine, but the socket is burned up:mad: . Now I know mine isn't the only one like this! Comments anyone? TSB's? Recall?
LanduytG 03-08-2005, 05:43 AM I just changed my passenger ide as well, in fact I change both even though the drivers side was OK. I thinks its because these bulbs are dual element and the buld draws more current than the socket can take. Burnt means to much current for the componet the bule is in. Not sure what can be done. Mine blow because the cover had water in it and it hit the hot bulb.

Black Dog 03-08-2005, 06:44 AM Use 4157K bulbs (the new GM spec). They are Krypton bulbs, and they don't burn as hot.

That is what Advanced Auto gave me. They said that is what the 4114 crossed over to but said nothing else about them. Good to know I have a better bulb now.

joshz06 03-08-2005, 07:17 AM I took my bulbs out, tired of messing with them.
BarryD 03-08-2005, 07:18 AM I am using the GE Nighthawks with good results. Much whiter light. I found the low beams to be some what lacking. The new bulbs have helped quite a bit.
Thunderhead7 03-08-2005, 08:04 AM I've noticed this on numerous trucks, thaanks for bringing this up.
aegis 03-08-2005, 08:42 AM I switched to amber DRL's 4157 I think they show up better the the clear/white bulbs.
I have always noticed this, Chevy DRLs are out on many chevy trucks. I have just been lucky with my 3 Chevy's.
Boilermaker 03-08-2005, 10:50 AM This is not a problem that is new to Chevy/GMC trucks, it has been around for a while. The part that is surprising to most is that it has little to do with the bulb and much to do with voltage spikes in the vehicle. GM is well aware of this from warranty issues, but it is simply cheaper to fix the DRL's under warranty than to resolve the problem. Rest assured, it is no coincidence that the passeneger side DRL's blow first. To some extent, the bulb acts as a fuse, as it is the weakest link in the electrical system under an electrical surge. In testing, GM trucks have spiked to as high as 19.2V, typically under conditions of high electrical draw, and most common when running the A/C on high (this is not always the case, however). They are recommending a new bulb for replacement, as mentioned before, and this style seems to be more resistent to the voltage spikes.
Goldneye 03-08-2005, 11:59 AM I switched to amber DRL's 4157 I think they show up better the the clear/white bulbs. Same here.
robbdmax 03-08-2005, 02:59 PM Has GM switched to the new bulbs for production? Just wondering if my '05 has the new bulbs or not.
Turfmower 03-08-2005, 05:45 PM When mine blow out, Im not going to replace mine. DRL are gay
mille-ryan 03-09-2005, 02:56 AM Both mine are burnt up and busted as well.I tried to replace but the sockets are tooo fried and brittle.Been running with out em for quite a while now, just an annoyance really.
CottonWoodBlues 03-09-2005, 06:00 AM I found the passenger side burned on mine as well. What I found was that the stock bulb was not seated in the socket all the way. So I've been sure to push them in firmly. Last time though, I switched over to the amber bulbs... just be a bit different. Since they don't offer any illumination, anyhow. Just my $.02.

qwikernu 03-09-2005, 09:02 AM How would clear 1157 LED's work? not so hot, but at least some DRL. Too bad my sockets are burned up.

So, your turning your headlights or hitting your foglight button during the day then, right?
DRL's are a very important safety device, and defeating them is not only putting you in danger, but the safety of others is compromised as well.
Lawnboy 03-09-2005, 09:07 AM the bulb is fine, but the socket is burned up:mad: . Now I know mine isn't the only one like this! Comments anyone? TSB's? Recall?
Is this just a Chevy thing, or are the GMC's at risk as well?
Rockin 03-09-2005, 12:57 PM So, your turning your headlights or hitting your foglight button during the day then, right?
DRL's are a very important safety device, and defeating them is not only putting you in danger, but the safety of others is compromised as well. I'm not saying they're a bad thing but very few vehicles out there have them. In fog and other low visiblity conditions they are nice. But, other than that, I don't think they do much.
Lawnboy 03-09-2005, 01:01 PM I don't think they do much.
They make your vehicle more visible during the day prior to your Auto Headlights turning on.
By making your vehicle more visible, your improving the safety of others who drive/walk around you.
Pro400exc 03-09-2005, 01:56 PM Can't you just turn the DRL's off? or is that only w/ the 03s and up Because i know if i just click my ight switch down once..it turns em off....But then your headlights don't turn themselves on..and i'm too lazy for that.so i just keep em on,lol
Lawnboy 03-09-2005, 02:08 PM Can't you just turn the DRL's off? Because i know if i just click my ight switch down once..it turns em off....
I don't think twisting the headlight switch will turn the DRL's off, but I never tried to do that.
The only way I know for sure is with the parking brake.
Str8 Eight 03-09-2005, 02:29 PM On 02's you can press the dome light override button twice and it turns them off. That is what I usually do.
Goldneye 03-09-2005, 02:44 PM I don't think twisting the headlight switch will turn the DRL's off, but I never tried to do that.
The only way I know for sure is with the parking brake. On my 04.5' i twist mine to the left and they turn off.
Cobra#3747 03-09-2005, 03:59 PM I just made it so my headlights are on all the time, DRL bulbs will take you broke after being out of warranty

If someone cant see/hear my big black truck coming blow'n smoke through the 5" straight pipe then the blind SOB shouldnt be on the road. J/K
Actually a majority of the time I run with mine off unless I think it might help(like backroads, higher speed, raining dusk ect.) Maybe that why I only killed one about a month into ownership and havent killed one since?
amber LED's would be slick and if i kill another I would like to go that way but if its a voltage spike that kills em I dont wana toast an LED($$$) Any thoughts/ideas???
Jeff@SGLC 03-09-2005, 06:57 PM Being Canadian every vehicle sold in Canada must be equiped with Daytime Running Lights be it amber or clear. Been law since 89 or 90. Do they make a difference, sure do. A lot easier to see then a vehicle without it.
The DRL over-ride does not work on our Canadian trucks as it would be breaking the law.
Hustler 03-10-2005, 10:02 AM Ok, I checked my truck out and my driverside drl is out, not passenger. Is this problem only for the passenger side?
Lawnboy 03-10-2005, 10:09 AM Rat had an idea....LED's
How bright would the clear LED's be for this application?
Rat, you driving a BLACK truck should WANT to be more visible. Black is one of the worst colors for visibility.
I guess the main problem with the DRL's being out is that the only way to check them is when you pull up behind someone and see the reflection, or have another person walk out front while your in DRIVE to check.
A little black electrical tape over the daylight sensor, and your headlights are on with the key.
duramaxdiesel 03-10-2005, 03:13 PM Yeah my sockets were burnt too. What's GM waiting for? Until a truck goes up in smoke before they fix the problem?
ChevyRat 04-19-2005, 12:48 AM What model of bulb is a clear lens for DRL's?
1BADDMAX 04-27-2005, 08:07 AM I had to replace both bulbs on my 1999 Z71 (new body style) at 36k. My 2001 2500HD is still on the original bulbs all around including DRL's and it has 103,800 miles. Go figure?!
