I was looking a 93 6.5 with only 60,000 miles it had been plowed with and really only used for that. is that bad when diesels are older with low millage because thats not even broken in is it? And what is it all about when people say diesels are tired?

I can't decipher what you are asking, can you elaborate please, Are you saying this was a snow plow truck? If so I'd be more concerned with suspension and corrosion issues than I would be about the engine necessarily. Plow trucks generally are exposed to a lot of salt slush I'd imagine, here in MS not a big concern. Some of you Nanook of the North types want to comment on what to look for a truck that spent it's life thus far as a snow plow pusher. 60K does not concern me if the engine was regularly serviced, trans, and rest of running gear may be another issue I'll defer to snow experts that linger in these parts.

I plow with my truck but, only my driveway and a few others. If this truck has been through some serious plowing I would check the front end out. A buddy of mine had to do some extensive work on his after 1 winter of plowing.

My concern was an old diesel engine with low miles is this a bad thing?

If it was sitting for an extended period of time, there's probably some dry rot on hoses, etc. I can't speak from personal experience, but I don't see why 60k is a bad thing.

I would think 60,000 would a good thing and IF everything else worked and looked OK. Then I'd go for it.

93 with only 63k think you might have yourself a find if price is rite, and engine wasn't abused, isnt 93 the 599 vintage block many look for?

Running with a " Large " plow blocks a lot of air... Plow trucks can have ' overheat damage ' plus all the other problems as stated above.
You need to now how it was used, Myself, I never bought a plow truck
except " cheap " and for an around town " Beater ". JMO

The dealer was asking 8500

That's top dollar but it's a good year for that truck. I saw one C2500 go for $1500 here recently with 150,000 miles.

I just came across this thread and you all seemed to know about good and bad year trucks. I bought my truck a couple a years ago: 95 6.5 TD from Canada - with 65,000 miles on it. Upon my researching I think it was just used as a dealer truck. The only thing I know about it is that is has a good transmission (from the the guy we talked to he told us it was one of the best transmissions Chevy made) Do you know whether or not there were any problems in this year that I should be aware of. Thanks

Howdy Diesel Chick; Welcome to the Diesel place.:)
Just to hlep you a bit we ask of posters asking for help to tell us a bit about their truck if they know. Like you said 1995, is it 1500, 2500, 3500 2 or 4 wheel drive I assume you have an automatic and a pickup? This lets folks help pin point issues better also current miles? You can put most of it in your signture area then you don't have to repeat it all the time.

I have a 1995 2x4 C-2500 L56 truck that I bought new and have about 186,000 miles. It's a been a good truck, there are some advantages to the '94's & 95's you can read the DCT's diganostic trouble codes with a paper clip. They tend to heat towing easier that 1997 and later that had a high volume water pump and dual thermostats. The 4L80e automatic transmissions is one of the few automatics that hold together behind a Diesel engine, Dodges are famouse for burning them up and to a lesser extent Fords too. With our trucks the PMD driver can be a trouble area and there are few other minor things that can cause a pain. These truck will tow a less than the Dodge and Ford unless you improve or add goodies to your engine.

I hope this helps you for a start, again welcome to a friendly Diesel site.:)

I am sorry about that thank you very much for the assistance 16gaSxS . My truck is a 1995 2500 4x4 automatic 6.5TD with 116,000 on it. I will have to add that to my profile so it will always come up. Do you tow with your truck? What would be the first mod you would suggest I do.

:thankyou2

Howdy Diesel Chick,

Welcome to the Place

Upper left tool bar is a "knob" (user CP); use that to update your sig so your truck config will be included with each question you post, then stroll by the FAQs and welcome notes I locked as a sticky post, most of your new to 6.5 Diesel stuff is there, if you don't see what you need there repost and we will add to the FAQs, that is a living thread we add to as each newcomer comes onboard.

Plow trucks also tend to be pretty hard on transmissions.

Hey you guys you should thank me I invited DieselChick over here after GMDT called her a troll. I think she will add a even more class this place and I'd bet she looks a lot better in her truck then most you guys do in yours.;)

Anywho Exhaust and intake mods are the best pay back and least coslty. Check Johns Kennedy's site on his tech tips there is some good 6.5 stuff every 94&95 truck owner should know.

I do tow I haul a 450 gallon water tank regular in a pickup box trailer, we have 22 foot TT for the camping thing and when things get hot I tow a flatbed with 1050 gallon water tank and I do that with 3.42 axel, thats a bit much so I make as few trips as posible with the big tank.

Posted on exhaust thread:

Besides the upgrades mentioned in this thread and others change your transmission fluid and filter and I would look at a deep transsmison pan that add 3-4 quarts more fluid to help keep the tranny cool. a few folks have had problems getting the SS exhaust to match up with the hangers. The Pinnical seems to match up better and good value at about $300 a bunch of folks have had real good luck with the Kennedy exhaust too and John is always willing to render any help need to get things right either here, phone or e-mail. Then the cooling upgrade John Kennedy proably has the best fan clutch is made to his specs, but since it's custom and smaller lots made it's a bit pricer but with your heavy trailer proably worth it. John also has a complete cooling upgrade kit. I pieced it all together with GM parts which his is and saved a few bucks but it's pretty convient. And with the cooling upgrade you might as well either change the time chain and gears out or go with the gear set which is more money but saves in ever having to change timing chain & gears again plus allows for closer IP timing. The timing set is behind the water pump so it's very little work or labor to have it done when you change the water pump. The gear set is ~$200 more than a time chain & gears. Then if you have any money left put gages in then you can ad a power chip the most popular are the Heath & Kennedy and John say his is best and Bill says his is best and most people that have gotten either seem happy. So for a pretty good chunk of change you can tow happly over hill and dale.
What is your axel Ratio? Is your 2500 a heavy or standard? (6 or 8 nuts on wheel 8 = heavy)<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Getting called a troll by GMdieselTech is validation that you're ok.

Diesel chick,

Add an auxillary cooler and fan after the tranny lines going to the radiator or a deep pan or both to keep the tranny from running the engine hotter while towing.

Get the exhaust open, gauge it for boost and pyro and dream about chargeair intercoolers.

Well I see I have a grand introduction. Hello to everyone, all your post (the ones telling me what mods to do to my truck are extremely helpful) I suppose you all know of the man who calls everyone a troll. It did get a little annoying when if he wasn't calling you a troll he was telling you to go to that stupid Biz host site that was a pain in the but - try to search it and every click it opens a new darn window - by the time I got to the page I think I wanted I had 7 pages open.

Any how have in your opinion which place do you feel would be best to purchase products for my truck SSDiesel or Kennedy?

Both vendors have good reputations I'll add another to the mix Heath Diesel, best to call all 3 and see what suits you best any specific mods in mind, for my money Heath FSD remote mount is only way to go, 7yr warranty for subsequent failure; as you can see in my sig I've used something from from several vendors that advertise here, SS Diesel is a recent one here but many good reports thus far on the forum.

HUM Heath might be some one to look at to.
I know Kennedy supports this site and helps pay for running this for us and he is here alot keeping us going with helpful tip. Might want to consider that some too.

Might want to consider that some too. Both John & Bill are good guys and quality vendors, I think Nick should put the arm on Bill to Advertise here too, since he gets plenty of plugs from satisfied users. I will by from both in the future. BTW speaking of SS Diesel has anyone tried thier manual glow plug over ride kit? I know you can add electronics to the GP system to lengthen the cycle, but I'm more of a give me a pre made up kit and dirrection and I'll muddel through it. When I want to estimate time for a mechanical project I take flat rate X 3 and I'm close.
Takes me longer but I can :grd: . most of the time.....

Oh yeah I was not talking trash about anyone iin our band of crazies, it was in reference to the Steak sauce banned brick.-:t
