I really want good mpg with my tire choice, but at what cost?
I got the basics down that a tall, wide, big lug tire is BAD for mpg.
It sounds like the wider the footprint/contact patch play a part in decreasing mpg. There also is a michelin tire out there people have not been happy with LTX m/s. Previously I was told "Michelin's are the Best tires made" my Dad says.
Many here have said you need to keep the rpm's under 2000 to get good mpg. Also driving slower helps 55 vs 65 or 65 vs that 75 ect. If a tire will give me 20mpg going 55mph and another does 22mpg at 55mph I want to know before I drop the $700-800.
To me a 235 85R16 tire sounds like a good size tire, keeps the rpm's down being taller than the stock. Smaller/ about same contact patch as stock. It could be a little heavier which will not help city driving but highway may not be affected as much?
I will mostly use the truck to only tow on trips about 4 hours one way. Loads are light like a 19 foot fiberglass boat, a 14ft enclosed snowmobile trailer (aluminum), or an open 14ft atv trailer.
The last part is what tread Highway tread or all terrain?
I had BFG all terrain K/O's (E load)on a suburban. When I switched to highway tread I REALLY missed them. Had to use the 4x4 button a lot more, did not have to get towed but I was worried couple of times.
I forgot but the wife reminded me that I did swear a lot at the Highway Treads during our winter trips.
P.S. stock size tires look silly on this big truck:duh:
