Search for Homemade turbomaster

Here's a pretty good one:

Other guys have just cut the vacuum canister in half, removed the diaphragm, threaded the rod, put on a spring and a washer/nut, and used that.

Warning: You shouldn't do this mod without gauges... when you build 'em yourself, you can't be sure what length/type of spring will give you safe boost levels... if you put on a Heath Turbomaster, they're all the same, so you can be pretty sure that a given compression setting will produce a given boost.

Just do a search! You could also look in FAQ section under Turbo/turbomaster. If you make it yourself you will safe alot of money.

have a gauge first for sure!!! I did mine, and didn't install my gauges until like a week later. I was spiking about 15 psi.

will the check engine light turn on if you overboost?

Sometimes I get a check engine light, but not always. I get a defuel which I believe comes with IAT at 210 F. After a couple of shut off and restarts, the light goes away. there are a couple of pictures of my TM in my garage.

Hey Rusty... a boost fooler will fix that defueling thing for ya... look here (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263675)

It just isn't cool to defuel pulling up into Golden...

I do have a boost fooler, but have it set a bit low as my wife uses the truck a lot and doesn't always watch the gauges as close as I would like. Am I right in thinking that 210 IAT will also cause a defuel? I added a Temp gauge to my intake and my defuel seems related to that temp. I'll turn up my pot and see if it goes away. I better update my sig.

I don't see how anyone can recommend a boost fooler. It only causes defuel when boost reaches a dangerous level at which point the extra boost is not doing you any good anyways. Doesn't matter if you engine defuels at 8, 10, or 12 psi, it doesn't need more than that to begin with. I think alot of people just like to see the boost gauge go way up there and also are misinformed into believing more boost = more power. That is NOT true unless you add more fuel. If you want to run more boost, get a chip or performance ECM but have the vendor leave the defuel feature in there. It may very well save you a $4000 engine.

I agree that a boost fooler isn't for everyone or every truck. Improper setting or monitoring could blow a motor. With the stock system there was no power, high EGT, heavy black smoke under load & had to pull high RPM to get up a hill. With a TM I get fairly low defuel settings on my PCM. In my case defueling was happening with steady 7-8 lbs boost which I don't think is too high. Less boost was causing dangerously high EGT, black smoke and no power. The boost fooler allows the fuel that the pump is designed to deliver and my TM is reasonably set to add the air volume that is needed to burn that fuel properly. If my water temp, EGT or IAT get too high, I back out to a safe level. I want a reliable truck with the highest safe power level and these mods are working for me.

In your case I could see that, but 7psi is plenty of boost. I don't understand the black smoke. Running 8psi should help cool things down a bit, I run 8.5. Ive never had a defuel problem tho, except when I had my TM set to a point where it had 12 psi for more than a few seconds. The only time I only see 8.5 psi is when my foot is on the floor, load or no load and i cant hold it there very long because ill be going well over the speed limit. That is one thing I just cant figure out. I don't know why some trucks have a problem with 8psi when most can run 10 (S engines) or 12 (F engines) before they have a problem. My truck was made in Mexico. Perhaps it depends on what country/plant it was made it. I don't know.
