My wife drives a 2001 jimmy. we bought it new and the only problem we are having with it is the air pump. we are now on the third air pump and it only has 31,000 miles on it. the dealer tells me this is normal. i am looking for help on this. is this a real problem or is there something else causing it to go. thanks!!!

Did they perform the bulletin, or just put in a new pump? Also, I generally like to replace the check valves on each manifold, if they burn out, they allow exhaust to enter into the SAI system. Here is the bulletin for you.

Condition

Some owners may comment on the check engine light being illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find a DTC P0410 indicating that there is a concern in the secondary air injection system.

Cause

Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump.

Correction

Replace the AIR pump and install a new inlet hose and solenoid tube assembly using the following procedure:

Prep vehicle.
Raise vehicle on hoist.
Remove shield covering AIR pump.
Remove hose and vacuum lines from pump and solenoid.
Remove AIR pump inlet hose. Do not re-use.
Disconnect electrical connectors from pump and solenoid.
Remove pump mounting bolts and pump.
Transfer isolators from the old pump to the new pump.
Install new AIR pump and bolts to vehicle.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 17N·m (12.5 lb ft)

Route new hose assembly up between engine and fender. It should come up near the area between the battery and the coolant bottle.
Connect new inlet hose to pump inlet.
Connect old outlet hose to pump outlet.
Connect electrical connector to pump.
Connect electrical connector for solenoid to connector on the new hose assembly.
Connect the hose with the white nipple to the vacuum source hose.
Connect the remaining hose to the shut off valve.
Install shield covering AIR pump.
Lower vehicle.
Remove coolant reservoir nut nearest the battery.
Route new hose assembly between the battery and the coolant reservoir with the solenoid on top.
Install the solenoid bracket onto the coolant reservoir stud and reinstall the nut back into the vehicle.
Use a wire tie to keep the new hose assembly away from the engine. On four cylinder engines, tie to the AIR outlet hose. On six cylinder engines, tie to an available hole in the radiator fan shroud.

Yeah, like he said. Basically, they are only fixing the end problem, not the cause. The air tube is picking up water and putting it into the pump. The TSB has the air intake tube routed up near the firewall/coolant jug area and then pointed at a downward angle to try and prevent as much as possible the water from getting in. I also see alot of them replaced that pop the fuse and the fuse never gets replaced. Its located in the fender, you have to loosen/remove the battery to get to it. IIRC its a 30 amp MEGA fuse. And Ditto on the check valves as well.

thanks for all your help. they replaced the fuse kit, hose, pump, (2) 12558992 valves and (1) 1255165 valve. unfortunately the bill was still 596.69. (this also included the serp belt) they clainmed they had a hard time getting the old check valves out due to corrosion. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

yes, getting the valves off the old pipes is a pain. I usually sell new pipes that attatch to the valves. The new pipes come with new valves, I think its only like 50 dollars more total, but it usually knocks an hour labor off that way, or at least the way I would charge for it, so the bill comes out a little less or the same.

I would check into haveing it covered under emmisions warranty...

I think that the emissions warranty is only on the converters and the computer. I just had something simular, they didnt want to cover it. However, always worth trying. Or you may ask for some assistance, since you have had multiple failures, they may split the cost with you. We do a lot of 50/50 splits and such.

Third time in 30,000 Mi.? With a bulletin? I would SCREAM WARRANTY all the way to the President of GM if I had to... Paying for a triple repeat failure that began during he warranty period and was never properly "corrected" should not cost you a dime.
