: Making Biodiesel

Is it practical for one to make it for themselves to use? We dont have a supplier locally, and with my newly acquired M1009 Blazer with the 6.2 in it, I have decided to revisit the theory. I have a few sources that I could probably come up with WVO to use for the project, and I have 2 100 some gallon fuel tanks that I could store it in. With fuel prices ready to skyrocket again, it sure would be nice to come up with a 'lower cost' camel independant solution.

Many do it. Takes a special kind of person if you ask me. I made a few gallons that were barely fit for B5 blend........

The real process aint too bad, but the prep for it is a b!tch.

You need the that link for the infopop.biodiesel.com? website.........

A good place to look would be: http://forums.biodieselnow.com/
Lots of good information on how to make your own.

The biodiesel now forum is not a bad source of info, but it is mostly about use from a consumer basis (like where to purchase it, etc.) There is a better forum that deals specifically with biodiesel production as well as svo systems:
http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve

And there is a huge amount of info on that forum.
There is also a smaller one but with lots of pictures called:
www.veggieavengers.com (http://www.veggieavengers.com)

This one has all the info you need on how to build a processor out of a used electric water heater tank, called the "appleseed processor," complete with pictures of people building them.
with a few good connections you can brew your own for close to .$50/gallon, which sure beats the $3.00/gallon prices we will see very soon for petro diesel.

I recently built a small processor and am about to put it in use in a few weeks. I run mostly svo but need some biodiesel as well. Once i get the technique down i will post some more info & pictures on this forum.

Grease Fire,

Your signature does not state what type vehicle you drive, can you let us know? I'm still a little hesitant about using biodiesel / WVO in my DMax...anybody running it with just the factory fuel filter?

I've been reading a lot about biodiesel and I have one question that I cannot find the answer to. What do you do with the glycerin that is left over from process the fuel? Does it have any value or do you just dispose of it?

Thanks,
MaxRock

I wouldnt worry about bio and the stock fuel filter.

Nicks kit is so cheap, why not do it? He has the fuel samples to prove that it is doing one hell of a job when compared to the stock filter...........

maxrock,
i have a 6.5 N/A and i so far am only running svo in a two tank system; but i should be making biod in a week or so, and i will put that in the main tank for startups.
regarding the glycerin left over from the process, if you put it in an open pot, OUTSIDE and far away from pets or people, you can put in on a campstove or portable electric stove and boil it for an hour or so, and this will boil off the remaining methanol. Then you have a very good degreaser, which will be very useful for me at least. I am not 100% sure on how long it takes to boil out the methanol, but an hour or so is what i have read so far - this step is critical.
Or you can just put it in a bucket and throw it away or compost it.

Manny, what "kit" are you referring to? I have been running biodiesel lately. At first I ran B100 in a completely stock DMAX with NO problems (smells like popcorn!). Now I have mixed it to about B20. I changed the stock filter after the first tank of B100 (posted picture earlier of a VERY DIRTY filter). Only have about 2 tanks on the new filter.
