I took my IH 484 for a spin tonight and seen some sparks come out the exhaust pipe. There wasnt alot of sparks but every once in a while Id see a few come out. It has 10 hours on the rebuilt engine and runs like a dream.

Is sparks from the exhaust normal?

Probably just built up soot that got hot enough to light up...wouldnt worry about it

Sounds normal to me my old farmall 350D will do that used to be interesting to watch it at night augering corn did that all the time. Now you know why diesels need Spark Arrester mufflers

the farms 4020 will actually have a little bit of flames come out once in a while you can see at night while its running the auger. not really noticeable unless you look for it but you can see it.

Both our 454 and 484 IH's do it, its minor.

Probably a bit of carbon in the exhaust or an exhaust valve could be a bit worn too if your seeing flames

Yep, sounds like carbon coming out and burning to me.

We had an old IH 656 gas, working her hard would let about a foot of flame come out the stack....freaked out cars passing by on the road:cool:

After the 484 gets good and hot it really lets out the soot.

The soot must build up in the muffler on the 484 and then heat up and flake off glowing like coal. When I first seen it all I was thinking about was pieces red hot steel comming out. Makes you start thinking, did I put everything together right?

My grandpa on my dad's side had his eye put out by a chunk of carbon from an old Farmall Regular or F20 (can't remember which). Kind of a bad-luck kind of deal.

I had a 8V71 Detroit in a MCI highway coach that threw sparks out of the exhaust for a while. Wasn't long after a rebuild, I I'm assuming it was just soot burning out of the exhaust system.

You dont think that may be a little hard on the exhaust valves?
