I was towing about 8,000lbs in T/H going down a hill in 5th gear. All of a sudden the truck downshift to I think 3rd -- redlines the motor and the next think I know I start smelling tranny fulid. I pull over and check for a leak thinking I blew a line. But it seems that some fluid puked out the tranny dipstick tube? - 2005 LLY/ predator on 65hp tune.

Is this normal or ???

Could you potentially had too much fluid in the tranny? The down shifting is normal from what you describe. When she finally decides to shift down, hold on tight Captain! I'm not sure if you knew it, but there is an "acceleration" redline and a "deceleration" redline. If you look closely at your tach, the red hash-type marks will turn to solid up around 4800 RPM, IIRC. It's supposedly OK to have the D-Max run this fast when it's grade braking. Scares the hell out of my dad--I just smile!

No but we could not find a leak but you smell it in the cab. Do you think that was just the tranny we were smelling?

I know if you overheat the Ford Tranny it will puke out the converter. Not sure about the allison though. Mike L. is the one to ask.

If the fluid puked out the fill tube that is a very bad sign, plus the fact that it is dangerous ( fluid on exhaust manifold can catch fire ). I have not seen an Ally do this. I suspect if fluid did puke out it came from overflow on top of trans case. That can happen at high rpm's if you are over full on the fluid. There should be a telltale sign if this happened. My Ally is slightly overfull and it only pukes out the overflow after a quarter mile pass at the strip, and I smell it.
