TexasTopKick6x6 03-07-2005, 07:35 AM NICE RIG!!!
What length wheel base is that? Has the 75mph govenor been a pain or have you bypassed it? What rpm does it run at 70mph with the 5.13 gears? Do you have rear air suspension with the conversion?
I've been trying to find a cab & chasis on any Texas dealer's lot but looks like I'll have to end up ordering one my way this week. Crew cab, 4x4, allison, 4500.
Anything you would order different if you were to build another one?
Everyone please chime in if experienced with the late style MED-Duty, especially 4x4.
Thanks
Mike
techprof1 03-07-2005, 09:30 AM The wheelbase is 167 w/ 60" cab to axle. Yes the 75 gov has got to go. It does not have the air ride on the rear but it is not a bad ride. I don't mind that. The governor would be one that I would like to remove. I have some serious grades from Phoenix to Flagstaff and it pulled them about 72. Not that I drive much faster than 75, it would be nice to be able to get up and around someone.
I have been looking for a 4x4 chassis since January. Came across this one upfitted with almost exactly what I was looking for. Most of the upfitted beds aren't made to put anything in the back. This one is 1/4" plate with side walls that are of the same.
Hmm, different. So far, guages. I am use to the WD guages I had in the ford. That will be the first item to add. Engine brake would have been nice. Next, some front hub caps that have holes in the so that I can lock the hubs without having to get a screwdriver and pop off the hubcaps. Not a big deal now that we are past the majority of our snow.
Dealer in Phx has one more just like it coming in in a couple of weeks. He has a red 2 wheel in stock that has more stuff than this one.
Thanks, Mike
ps....I am open to getting rid of the gov'nr as well. Any ideas-I would appreciate it.
Take pics of the rear of the bed. It looks cool with the body styling and extra storage.
3500dmax 03-07-2005, 11:39 AM Very nice. What did it cost $$$ if you don't mind me asking? Also who makes the bed? Anyone have info on the front axles? I know they are D60s but what are the complete specs?
techprof1 03-07-2005, 03:34 PM Jeli, go to this website http://dixiecustomtrucks.com/ then select the photo album and then 4500 medium duty. Several truck pics there as well as mine.
3500dmax.....Cost....i have not recovered yet..66K and some change.
I'll get better bed pics later. Interior is really custom as well.
TexasTopKick6x6 03-07-2005, 04:10 PM Thanks for info. I'm looking at 10-12 weeks for delivery. That'll give me enough time to build a bed and find a fix for that speed limiter.
JJs DuMax 03-07-2005, 05:04 PM Best looking 4500 I've seen. Congrats! JJ :)
3500dmax 03-08-2005, 03:00 PM techprof1 could you get some pictures of the SFA setup and more detail pictures of the bed including the tailgate? I wonder how high the bedrails are compared to the Monroe bed.
techprof1 03-09-2005, 10:15 AM Took a road trip yesterday.....about 300 miles empty driving 67 mph and got a wopping 10.8 mpg (5:13 gears).
The bed rails are 12" instead of the standard bedrail height like monroe uses. That is why I like this. W/ the 5'er, there is no issue of the bed hitting trailer. I have quite a whoop that I have to back my trailer where I park it. So it will be nice in that sense. I What I like about the bed is that the bottom and sides are 1/4" plate w/ a sprayed bed liner.
I'll get pics soon. Can't find the d*** charger for the camera.
As far as the SFA.... I have to carry a screwdriver with me. The truck has locking hubs and if you look at the front wheels, hubcaps. I have to pry them off to lock the hubs. Let me tell you....low four wheel drive-amazingly low geared.

Considering what a suburban runs today I'd say 66K is good. I only wish I had a need for one of these.

You got that right techprof1, it ain't got "nothing" to do with need! It is pure 100% want! And I want one. My truck will probably pull everything I will ever want but, I will move up as soon as I can figure out how. techprof1, what will you be pulling with your new ride anyway? Do you have a picture of the truck and tow vehicle?

Do you have a picture of the truck and tow vehicle?I pull a 40' 5'er weekend warrior toy hauler 15k, a water trailer 10k, then I pull whatever the US Forest Service needs pulled (contract work). They have one wells fargo pull trailer that weighs about 15K with a lot on the bumper.
I have only pulled the water trailer with it a couple of nights ago. It a short tug up the hill but pretty steep. It was nice.
I'll be taking a trip next weekend with the toy hauler to Yuma, AZ to the sand dunes...Spring break! I'll take some pics of the rig then.
