I know this has been talked about alot and i have done several searches on it. Ok, if you have an lb7 and lly of equal weight, both producing 400ish in the horsepower department and niether have egr, is the lly more responsive because of the variable vane turbo? Does the turbo spool up quicker? What are the pros and cons of each for horsepower and daily driving?
Thanks in advance for your input.

iv had both and i would say that the LLY is better IF and its a big if, you straight pipe it , with the stock exaust it sucks off the line and it runs hotter than an LB7 but straight piped it rocks and in my opinion is better than the LB7 no matter what. And with the twins cummin out nuthing will stop the LLY. Just my 2 cents.

LB7, I'll power mine down to the same HP as an LLY and go head to head any day.

The LLY is more responsive. Mine is more responsive than my LB7 with injectors (which made my LB7 much more responsive). Even with the EGR and stock exhaust I noticed a difference. Without both I notice a bigger difference. That doesn't mean it's faster it just means you'll be ahead of the LB7 for a second or two (provided you both take off from an idle with no boost) but that's it. If they both have the same amount of hp, same weight, and took off at EXACTLY the same time I would say the LLY would win by 6 inches. :)

The LB7 currently will walk the LLY at current horsepower levels. The LLY just looses too much on the shifts and has quirky torque/power management issues. My LB7 way back when at similar power levels as the LLY was turning a few tenths quicker in the 1/4. The LB7 just blasts along, very linear and clicks off the shifts. The LLY is hitchy in the power delivery and the boost really lays down on shifts. Not that it is not strong, it feels good but it is night and day swapping back and forth between them at the track. The LLY feels great at 1/4 to 1/2 go pedal but fully at the mat it tends to get a little funky.

Once the programming gets figured out the LLY should be pretty strong....

Is this with the Predator LLY or Edge LLY? The Predator after a bit of learning does the gears well except the 1-2 shift is a bit slow. The Edge LLY I can't get to shift for beans.

So far both have shifted decent on my truck. The Edge on my truck never had the bad shifts like others have reported. No problem with barking either.

The Predator started out a little slow but it did learn in. The shifts are not the big problem as far as quality or speed but the turbo really lays down when shifting. It almost acts like a manual shift in comparison to the LB7. Once the turbo spools on the LB7 it pretty much stays there whereas the LLY is having to manage the turbo.

Interesting.

I think the key will be in figuring out how the vanes move in relation with exhaust flow. If it is like a variable pitch prop on an aircraft (high rpm = fine pitch / low rpm = fat pitch) or vice versa.

I just have not had the time to hook up the Tech II to gain any insight on vane position, I just have a few redneck theories. :D

I have owned an '02 EXT cab 4x4 Silverado and now an '05 CC 4x4 Sierra. I can honestly say that the '05 is more responsive and has more pulling power than the '02. I have pulled hills with the '05 in 5th gear that the '02 would downshift on. (both stock at the time). I'm not sure, but I am confident that the '05 would take the '02 in the 1/4. The downside to all of this is that the '02 got on average about 2.5 mpg better mileage.

I now have the Predator installed (40 or 65 hp depending on load) and I must say that it is impressive. I am now considering an exhaust system but I just can't convince myself that the benifits will be worth the cost. Oh well I am rambling off topic now so I'm finished.
