Me and a few friends straight piped my 05 dmax on friday and it sounds awesome. I used the summit five inch system, and we welded a peice to fit in the place of the muffler. First started it up and we thought something was wrong, the whistle from the LLY turbo is awesome. It idle it literally sounds like a jet and sometimes you can hear the pitch of the noise change with the VVT. I'd definatly recommend it to anyone. Sound is loud but not that bad. On the highway with the windows it up, you can hear it but its not that annoying. The whistle just plain sweet with the VVT.

However, on the third start, got the check engine light. Gonna be looking into installing a finger stick here real soon.

it sounds great and starts sounding better and better as your pipe gets a little soot in it. if your getting a code do the fingerstick mod and all problems solved. well worth the 20 bucks or so.

Been thinking about doing straight pipe, would like to hear a sound clip of yours if you can get it!! I think we all would!

About the sound clip, i dont really have anything to do it with, however, ill see what i can do. It sounds sweet, its not like any other diesel pickups ive heard (LB7, Cummins, Powerstroke). Actually i guess it kinda sounds like a straight piped powerstroke, maybe. When I shift gears, it lets out a really cool sound, like air rushing back in or something. Hard to explain.

Also, started it up this morning, check engine light went off after letting it warm up for about 5 mins):h . Then after driving for about 5 mins it came back on:rolleyes: .

Is that Kittyless or is it a Cat back sysytem?

Get a Fingerstick and blockerplate, that should do it. Maybe I'll see you at one of the pulls this year. Are going the 4wheel Jamboree this year in Lima? Or the pull at Marysville that was at the State Fairgrounds.

Its straight piped turbo back, no cat, no muffler.

Yeah i plan on fingersticking and blocking. As far as pulls, I wont be pulling my truck in the near future, but yeah i may be at some pulls this year.

05DMAX - what part number did you get from summit? Did it have the front pipe? (the cat elim. pipe)

The part number is SUM-680006 (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2D680006&N=110&Ntk=KeywordSearch&Ntt=duramax+exhaust). It is full turbo back, the cat elim pipe is similar to an LB7's except its 4 inch, then it opens up to 5 inch the rest of the way. Great system would recommend it to anyone, 5 inch systems are kinda hard to come by, especially at a reasonable price.

Thanks - just got done ordering the kit online. I'll post feedback when I get it installed.

Got the Summit 5" kit on Friday, installed Saturday - WOW.

I installed the muffler, it sounds good!!! Went out running around the town last night and rolled the windows down when going under overpasses so I could hear the echo.... it was awesome. The passengers I had were very impressed. And what a difference in power. With predator on 65 hp it felt like it was on 100.

Install took about 4-5 hours on the floor. Cut OE behind muffler to get off and had to jack the front up quite a bit to get the cat pipe out. Kinda tight clearance around the rear shock, spare tire, and mud flap area - not a design flaw just massive pipe.

Would this kit fit on a longbed crewcab..the summit catalog is kind of hard to understand!

That's what I have. CC Long box dually. No cutting. If you don't have a dually you may need to cut the tailpipe down a tad bit.

I had the same problems, with the rear section around the shock/spare. I think i need to adjust mine a little bit it seems to be bumping the shock. I'm probably going to trim my pipe at the exit also, probably get a tip or something.

Has anyone been able to compare the sound of the 4" straight pipe to the 5" straight pipe? I just removed the muffler from mine, making it 4" front to back. However its still not as loud as I want it, would 5" make it louder?

Everyone told me to straight pipe mine but I left the muffler on. From the posts I've read the straight piped LLY's sound like a jet. I didn't want that sound only, I wanted that deep diesel bellering sound. My truck sounds like a vacuum at idle but the more throttle you give it the louder and meaner it sounds. I like it and I've had tons of compliments on it.

CSTD, what was your impression of the quality of the muffler?

OB, it looked fine to me. I wasn't interested in stainless steel, I don't plan on seeing my exhaust very much other than the tip. The muffler looked fine, decent welds, etc. If you're in it as a 'show' truck you probably want T304, but you can't see any of the muffler unless it's in the air, on it's side, or on it's lid. Only one of those will happen to me.... in the air on a hoist.

Cummin'_Stroke_this_Dmax (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/member.php?u=9173), did you get any EGR codes/Check Engine Light? If not, have you installed a finger stick?<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_518233", true); </SCRIPT>

CSTD, I was more thinking of the guts of the muffler. Some are packed with glass that can blow out easily.

I ordered it last night from Summit anyway. A little concerned as to what I'm going to do 5 years from now when I need to have an emissions test done, as that was a selling point of the 4" systems with the cat replacement piece.

How banged up was your system upon arrival? Any install tips other than to get that front end way up? And how far is way up? Any droning in the cab?

I straight pipes my 05 today after work and so far I love it. I havent had it on the freeway or up to any cruising speeds yet I was to busy getting on it so we could here what it sounds like. Definetly has more whistle and a pretty decent rumble about 1600-1800 leaving the line but other than that it sounds not much louder than stock. Dead kitty & straight pipe no SES yet I have finger stick and EGR plate just havent got to it yet.

Anyone put on a Summit 5" SS? I am curious about the quality, and how well it went together. I put a cheap 3" SS dual exhaust on my 68 camaro and it took me forever to get it on, what a pain. Pick up my 05 HD in the morning and I can wait!

05DMAX - I haven't got any SES lights yet. I went on a 350 mile round trip with temps up around 40 degrees and no light. I've been waiting for it to turn on. I kinda wondered if the muffler is adding just enough back pressure to keep it happy?

Oilbrnr - I don't think the muffler has any glass in it. I didn't look that close before I installed it and my midget friend said she would'nt crawl through my tailpipe to inspect the muffler for me. (she claims she ain't that small.....) After that trip with it it seems to have a little more resonance to it, not much in my book. The system was kinda scratched up but it was not beat up at all when I got it. The box was ripped and tore up but I checked it out while the UPS guy watched and it all looked good..... no bent or dented pipes, just scratches in the alumized coating - oh well, I'll live with it.

Install tips: don't tighten up anything real tight until you have everything on and where you want it. Use a jack stand around the muffler area to keep the weight of the system off the true down pipe and v-clamp. (I think we tightened the v-clamp pretty early in the install to keep it from coming off.) Take off the bracket bolted to the tranny to get the cat pipe off. Mark the pipes so you know how far they're supposed to slide together. Handling 5" exhaust is kinda a pain in the rear. Most important - have a good buddy do most of the work and you just be the gopher to get him the tools he needs!!!

Yeah, I'm thinking the muffler might just be enough to make the truck happy, but you're probably gonna get a light sometime or another. Mine is still on and still seems to have a "defuel" at high RPM with the light on. Also, it has randomly gone off twice only to return about 5 or 10 mins later. Kinda sucks cause ill be driving it about 2000 miles here in the next week. Finger stick should be at the house when i get back.
