i found one off od ebay for about $200. it is 24x12x3 with 3" in and 3" out.

if i find an easy way to plumb it, i will share it with you all!

with this size of intercooler, looks like i have to remove the 10 neon tubes i have under the bumper! oh well, i would rather have better performance in my older age LOL

Are the inlet outlet on the same side?

Just 10 ?

no, the in/out are on opposite ends. i figure to let the "in" side be on the drivers and the "out" of the intercooler be on the passengers side closest to the upper plentum.

the least expensive "same side" in & out i could find was $400 and would not have been as easy to mount (by looking at the specs & looking at my truck!)

yes bowtie, i have only 10 neon tubes under the front bumper! i actuallt have 16 more setting on the shelf i have not got to install yet. my goal was 100 neon tubes....i have 42 mounted now, and that took about 30 hours of wiring to make it correct and not overload anything.

WOW I would never have guessed it would take so much to wire up some lights. Guess you never know to you have lived it. RIGHT ??

Is there anyway to rotate the intake tube more toward the driver side to ease installation?

Hey Mr. T, you've got the same style hood as I do. Is yours vented at the windshield? If so, why not mount the IC on top of the motor with an electric cooling fan? Summit racing has their own brand that's rated for over 1,500 cfm and is under $100. Could save a lot of time trying to plumb everything to the front bumper. You'd also have less loss of boost pressure because you're not running as much post turbo tubing. I'm guessing that you've got some bridging on the underside of that hood that would need to be modified to make room for the IC. At the very least, you wouldn't have to reduce your under chassis candle power rating.....:D

This is one of the mods I've been thinking about for down the road. Replace that plastic "turbo power" engine cover with an IC. Anybody have any reasons why this should not be done?

thats a great idea...........but will it be in a place to cool it enough? the top of the motor gets pretty hot in the summer doing towing even though my hood is vented at the rear.

lets just find out if anyone has mounted an I/C on top the motor..........?

It will catch heat evertime your stopped in traffic. Under the front where the air dam is will most likely be the spot as the dimentions preclude mounting it in the direct airstream.

i think it might be worth looking at as the boost is not needed while stoped in traffic.

chances are it will mount under the bumper.

I'm ok with the top of engine mount. Please take some install pics either way.

I think that's a bad idea.:badidea: It's suppose to be a cooler. Mounting over the engine like that and you will never have the same cooling that you get with a below mount.

Second it will now be in the way for any engine work.

I'm ok with the top of engine mount. Please take some install pics either way.I think the plumbing will be a nightmare. But let us know how it goes and give us some pictures:exactly:

I agree, it would not cool as much as if it were bumper mounted. However, it will still cool..... I'm guessing that a worst case scenario might be 20% less cooling than bumper mounted. If so, is lesser cooling offset by less boost pressure loss, as described by those with bumper mount intercoolers. As for in the way for engine work, I don't think that a properly designed configuration should take more than 10 minutes to remove... I want to see this idea work, but I don't have the time to tackle it just yet:cool: .

OH I too would love to see this and other ideas work and get the bugs out. I try not to stomp on anyone's idea's. I wonder if something could be installed in a ram air type hood with air flowing thru front to rear and not even open to the engine compartment.

Look at the bolt pattern on you upper plenim, shorten the 2" tube, turn it 180 degree's to the firewall and your intake will be pointing into the direction of the drivers side, hoses from there to the drivers side of the rad for IC plumbing. You won't be able to pull the fuel filter without removing the upper plenim but i've already got the bypass filter set-up i'm going to mount directly above the existing one onto the firewall above it and probably remove the factory filter all together.

At least thats what i've been planning on doing with mine when time permits.

Top mount charge air cooler works for 300hp Scubydoos but they have huge air scoops. If you are willing to do this much fab work why not just make room for it in the grille where the cooling fan draws across it even when you are stopped or going slow maybe trail riding or dyno day. I do like the hood idea I even took some measurements thinking about what size cooler I could fit. I know I know every little bit helps and its better than what we were given from GM but if I'm gonna do it I'm going for the biggest damn intercooler I can fit in the front. Chit, make IT your grille and mount lights in front of it on the bumper!:ro)

this is a good link that describes the physics about intercoolers. Might prove useful for those shopping around for one. http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/intercooler.html

There is a truck out there with this setup and it's on the net. I can't remember what site but will find it.

I am planning this setup with mine. I picked up a WRX hood scoop to mount on the hood to direct air thru it. As stated there will be no cooling in traffic , but who needs boost in traffic....? I will take pics too, but my 6.5 is in a scout II so it will be slightly different....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Anybody try a Hilsch Vortex tube cold air generator to cool the air?

hey DieselPro, tell me more!

also i have looked at several other hoods to allow for engine mount IC, but none looked like they would work better then what i have already. also great to keep in mind, boost is not needed while setting still!

Hey Mr. T if your hood is vented at the windshield, you probably have pretty good air flow at highway speeds. I have no way of measuring on my hood, but I do remember leaves getting sucked flat against the vent holes last fall. The scoop does NOT have to face forward to get air flow.

Subaru uses a top mount intercooler on the Outback. I don't know if they incorporate an electric fan or not, but some engineer must have realized that it is possible to have a functional top mount IC.

Summit racing has an electric fan that puts out a maximum of 2,300 cfm....that's a windstorm! You could mount the intercooler right on top of the turbo with that and it would still cool the intake air...well, probably.... the down side is that the electic fan draws 14.2 amps and adds another $100 to the mix. Then there's the thermostat, wires, connectors, relays..:blahblah:
