: Bent driveshaft?

Had some squeaking in the rear of my dually. Took it to the dealer, they initially said it was a bad U joint. While removing driveshaft, they noticed a good sized dent in the driveshaft, and want to replace the whole thing. Of course, they don't want to warranty it. Does this sound right? Should I be pressing more for a warranty claim?

Ask to see the dent and go from there. There is a chance it could be bent but they are quite sensitive to anything that would put them out of balance.(driveshafts and dealerships!)

Why would it be a warranty claim? Driveshafts aren't supposed to hit anything in normal operation.

I don't know. I bought the truck used, and it appears to have lived a pretty soft life. Anyway, the dealer thinks a rock or something hard hit it, and bent it. I guess I need to pony up, and just pay for it.

I saw it this morning. It has a golf ball sized dent in it.

I'd check around before paying dealer list, just as a suggestion.

How close to the end where the u-joint was changed is the dent? One of the local dealer ships here has a tech thats awful good at missing and wacking the tube when changing u-joints. Another thing to consider, is it is sometimes possible to straighten and re balance a driveshaft with a minor dent in it, Ive done it for a dealer in my area a couple of times to bail them out of buying there customer a driveshaft. While it is a "questionable practice" if the balance numbers are good when all is said and done then your problem is fixed other than the hideous dent.
