: #8 piston gone
wealthywitetrash 08-26-2008, 04:51 PM Ok so i have blown the the number 8 piston cracked the face and put a dime size hole in it. The cylinder wall is also damaged. After reading on here my best bet seems to get the cylinder overbored and replace the pistons and connecting rods. The dealership mechanic doesnt see anything wrong with the cylinder heads and only other possible bottom end damage might be bearings. I am just wondering which way i should go with performance parts. Wat do i need to replace to allow my engine to hold up. Also if anyone knows of a shop in the san francisco bay area where i could get this rebuild work done.
Tony Burkhard 08-26-2008, 04:54 PM I have a motor that could be ready in two weeks for a drop in.
Trippin 08-26-2008, 05:30 PM At the very least I would install aftermarket rods, pistons with remachined bowls, head and main studs or buy a complete from Tony.
wealthywitetrash 08-26-2008, 05:51 PM ok wat would be the difference in price between gettin the block bored and put back together with upgrade parts vs going with a brand new mild built motor? i want to keep it streetable and able to tow but still get up and go can shoot me a pm if prefered
Tony Burkhard 08-26-2008, 10:58 PM Give me a call at 989-550-1288
wealthywitetrash 08-26-2008, 11:37 PM alright looks like u will be hearing from me tomorrow
SteveFord 08-27-2008, 12:17 AM Any reason why it cracked or if the hole came first why? Being you do have dual cp3's or bigger turbo in your sig I can't see it being from too much power. Also what was you doing when it let go? Just asking since yours is an lb7 and everyone says the lbz pistons are the weak ones.

Man I can't type I meant to say you don't have dual cp3's or a bigger turbo. This dumb editing option also dosen't change anything when I use it!
wealthywitetrash 08-27-2008, 03:22 PM i was towing my 22ft north river boat up a grade in level three on the ppe. No idea how much the boat weighs. Was about 95 outside and i was crusing at about 65 goin up the grade egts were not to hot and all my gauges were reading fine. All the info i can give ya. I dont know enough to tell ya why it cracked or if the hole came first.
Tony Burkhard 08-27-2008, 04:06 PM The crack comes first, I have seen stock LB7 and LLY motors crack pistons so dont think you screwed up.
SteveFord 08-27-2008, 06:34 PM Thanks for the info! Man that sucks! Hope you get it fixed and back on the road soon.
wealthywitetrash 08-27-2008, 06:39 PM yea it sucked specially goin camping towing a boat but i guess it gives me an excuse to build the motor up right
dmax4u2nv 08-29-2008, 04:17 AM that sucks man. what are you gonna do? jim said youre having a friend build it. im assuming voss.
wealthywitetrash 08-29-2008, 02:57 PM yea looks like the route i am goin to go. I talked to him and the guy that builds his pro truck motors hooked me up with his shop. They have rebuilt some duramaxs going to go talk to them today.

Same thing happened to me, except it was cylinder #5. How much over bore can you machine? Mine is going to the machine shop on monday, i have LLY pistons and Carrillo rods already, just hope the block isnt junk......
Tony Burkhard 09-12-2008, 09:19 AM .040 over

What over size pistons do you have?
bronson 09-12-2008, 05:45 PM What over size pistons do you have?
I got 16:1 LLY pistons from BMS machine.... i ordered them before i realised the damage, to be honest im not sure if they oversized.... i got the motor shut down straight away, im surprised how much scoring there is.
bronson 09-12-2008, 05:47 PM .040 over
if you have to go over this can you use a liner?
Tony Burkhard 09-12-2008, 05:50 PM if you have to go over this can you use a liner?I dont like to use sleeves, they are not as hard as the cylinder, and they dont transfer heat as well.
Diesel Tech 09-12-2008, 10:20 PM Some blocks will go +.060, you just need to check them first. We've done several motors with a +.060 bore already without issue. If your looking to go forged we got you covered from STD to +.060"
wealthywitetrash 09-13-2008, 03:55 AM mine had to be bored .02 over parts got there today should be done by end of next week

i might be needing the full .060
wealthywitetrash 09-19-2008, 09:59 PM so should be gettin my truck back next week and i am assuming i should prob run stock untill like my first oil change to make sure everything is in working order and breaks in, any one having any input on this?
Diesel Tech 09-19-2008, 11:28 PM It really depends on how the motor was assembled. If it was put together on the tight side, yes take it easy and break it in. Change the engine oil and filter at 500 miles. Then run it easy/ normal operating for at least 1000 miles. Now if it was assemble loose like a race motor warm it up and drive it about 10 miles and bring it back and check everything. IF its all good then go give it hell.
wealthywitetrash 09-20-2008, 01:01 AM ok thanks for the advice i will talk to my mechanic and bring up those points and see wat he has to to say
ripmf666 09-20-2008, 02:47 AM Mine wasn't that bad.

dmax4u2nv 10-01-2008, 03:09 AM what the deal son? you get your shit back yet
wealthywitetrash 10-02-2008, 08:52 PM haha nope still workin on it all put together in the truck but wont start, think something is wrong with fuel not gettin enough had to test the cp3 and then the injectors to find where the problem is just sittin and waiting for them to diagnose the problem
wealthywitetrash 10-03-2008, 11:26 PM well turns out i have atleast one injector gone as well, could this have played any role in the piston failure?
IOWA LLY 10-04-2008, 12:04 PM Oh yeah....
fire0021 10-05-2008, 03:08 PM well turns out i have atleast one injector gone as well, could this have played any role in the piston failure?
interesting. if it stuck def could of played a part in the hole
MAX4X4 01-14-2009, 01:18 PM What's the latest?
Do you think it was the injector that caused the problem?
blk2dmax 01-14-2009, 04:10 PM At the very least I would install aftermarket rods, pistons with remachined bowls, head and main studs or buy a complete from Tony.
SPEND ALOT NOW & PUT GOOD INTERNALS WHILE YOUR IN THERE!
