: SBC Clutch update

I thought I'd post up a little update on my SBC DD CB. I bought this clutch from Dynadroit Diesel one of our vendors back in the fall of 05. From day 1 the clutch performed flawlessly. It also made noise from day 1 which isn't an issue IMO and only takes a short time to get used to. To date I have close to 95,000mi on it or which probably 50%-60% have been towing my 33' tandem dually flatbed that weight 8,000lbs empty. I regularly have it loaded to 35,000-40,000lbs gross and run 65mpg on the highway and 75mph on the interstate, normally in 6th gear. This may or may not have contributed to my syncro issues but I do have almost 190,000mi on the truck. To date I have run less than 10K with the truck at stock power levels since I had the clutch installed. It's always at least 75rwhp over stock and sometimes over 500rwhp. We are going to dyno it next week and hope to break 575rwhp. We also have close to 30 hooks to a sled without issues.

Hope this gives guys that are looking at clutches an idea how the DD CB's work and hold up.

This is one of the first customers (and now a friend!) who's new DD Max Con CB was installed by me! Really glad it works so well and also glad, Kyle, that you shared your info to tranny owners!

Feel free to ask questions to make sure you understand how these work so, if you need one you can understand what you will see, feel, hear, and use/work!

BTW, this is very similar to what was priviously built earlier by SBC for Dodges and Fords and worked well for them also!

not braggin but I beat ya, I am currently at 214,000 I put the DD in at 106,000. It has worked flawlessly, no synchro problems. I very seldom rush it throught the gears. Mine still shifts "hard" like it did new. One day this winter I am going tto tear it apart just to check on wear.

I'm glad to see you're racking them up too.
Sounds as if you been real careful with your tranny unlike me. Mine gets abused a lot towing at the HP levels I have towed at and that has to be partly to balme for bad syncros.
These 4000rpm-4500rpm launches sledpulling can't be good for it either but it still works great.

or exceeded 3250 RPM. Heck the only time I spun my tires was by accident.

I drive careful. I want to get 500,000 miles out of this one;)

My clutch has been holding up well also:D

Probably over 100 runs at the dragstrip now and it still holds up to 2800rpm launches!

The trans since being rebuilt has been great also. Im sure a "semi shifter" isnt really made to hold up to drag race shifting but it seems to handle it well. I dont know how the original owner of the truck drove either which may have contributed to the rebuild at 40,000 miles:rolleyes:

All in all I am 100% pleased with the clutch and tranny on this truck....sure wouldnt trade it for a slushbox Allison:stirthepo

I guess you have forgotten about ol' duramaxedout rolling around on the garage floor many nights taking out and putting in the ol ZF-6? Kyle was the first customer and I appreciated his trust in letting me put it in. Let's also not forget who's zf-6 truck had all the fun testing the very first beta Southbend flywheels and clutches. A certain Greystone metallic clutch test dummy truck. Glad to hear everyone is having good luck with their SBC set-ups and all the R&D paid off.
As an update as I posted in the ZF-6 Location tread, my old truck is for sale by the current owner and it is still running strong with the original SB flywheel and DD clutch...and I do mean the original! He has had no issues with the set-up at all!

Man I sure wish I could, but that would mean I would have to give up the Harley...and that isn't going to happen! But it I sure do miss my truck!

Well it is simple economics my fellow ZF-6 brotheren...45mpg at $3.80 pg and $18 fill ups or the truck at $4.38 pg at $125 fill ups. Although I certainly do miss blowing smoke on unsuspecting victims in their pretty little convertibles and lets not forget about the taste of smoked rice....ahhh the good ol' days!

Considering I just pad $3.93 for diesel it's getting better all the time :D. I understand though.

it is running 3.91 to 4.01 in Indiana and Ohio. Hurts when I fill up 115 gallon in bed plus the truck tank:eek:

highest priced fillup so far $575.00 I think it was $4.53/gallon that day

Well I guess the time has come for a rebuild :o: :(. I was cruising about 65mph and was just messing around and punched it. About 80mph it started to feel odd and I backed off and hit it again and got a definate slip. This was thursday, since then it's probably slipped a dozen times.
I have not dyno'd the tune currently in it but it's well north of 500rwhp and probably above 550rwhp.

If anyone has a extra clutch sitting around I'd be interested in a spare so I have something to run when I pull this one out.

IDK for sure. I'm going to call Peter and see what my best options are. I can't afford down time now cause my 03 is back in the body shop.

I just got it swapped out and it's definately showing lots of wear. It looks like I've had it hot enough the discs had a glazing on them too and that wasn't helping either. Will try to get some pic's up tomorrow.
