Not sure, but I know someone knows here. I have seen this photo flying around the internet of a Suburban that supposedly has the new 4.5 engine in it. It's basically the same thing as the Ford Excursion. If this is true, that's going to be one sweet truck.

Diesel Chevy Suburban HD - Return Of The Diesel Suburban

Introducing The 4.5L Duramax HD Z71

It's been almost 10 years since General Motors stopped selling the Chevy/GMC Suburban with an optional diesel engine. Since the demise of the 6.5L Subs, the only fullsize SUV (http://www.dieselpowermag.com/news/0802dp_chevy_suburban_hd/index.html#) you could buy with an oil-burner was the Ford Excursion, and that disappeared after 2005. that's all set to change thanks to the '07 SEMA introduction of the Chevy Suburban hD Z71 concept with a fuel-sipping 4.5L Duramax diesel V-8 under the hood.

http://static.dieselpowermag.com/_SiteConfigs/_global/images/clear.gif;this.width= (http://www.dieselpowermag.com/news/0802dp_chevy_suburban_hd/photo_02.html)

The truck (http://www.dieselpowermag.com/news/0802dp_chevy_suburban_hd/index.html#) you see here is the result of a "what if" exercise where designers combined the Suburban 2500hD with the popular Z71 off-road package (a combo that's not currently offered). Production parts include the front-end assembly from a 3/4-ton Silverado, a 9 1/2-inch 14-bolt rear axle, Z71 running boards, and a stylized, polished version of the familiar bazooka tailpipe found on LMM trucks. the design experiment also included concept pieces such as 20-inch chrome wheels, a billet fuel door, chrome hood louvers, and rear fender flares to match the look of the new front clip.

The 4.5L Duramax V-8 under the hood will be rated at more than 300 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque, which should be enough to lug a hefty trailer while achieving 20 mpg or better. Although this Suburban hD Z71 is only an experimental concept, it looks like GM is serious about selling it here in the U.S. because it appeared to be equipped with a ureaspraying selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which means it could meet the new emissions rules and be sold as early as 2009. We can't wait!

Any confirmation on if it will be in the 1 ton or is it just a guess? Everything I have read hints toward it will only be offered in the 1500's, but nothing definite.

No confirmation, but since GM has halted the GMT-900 SUV update that was to happen around 2012, something will have to be done to bump up CAFE numbers. This is a logical way to do that. This engine will easily get better mpg's than the gassers available in the GMT-900's. Some talk in GM going on that the next Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade could be on a stretched Lambda platform (Outlook, Enclave, Acadia, etc.) So, then again, may only be found in the Suburban size, if they differentiate the platforms. Only time will tell. Chris

But vehicles over 8600 GVWR (2500HD and up) are not rated by the EPA for fuel economy, so they are not included in CAFE numbers. So, putting the 4.5L in the 2500HD and up really does nothing for GM other then giving customers another engine choice. I hope they do use the 4.5L in the HD trucks, but I'm not convinced that they will from a money making stand point.

True, but the Tahoe/Suburban is included in CAFE, only the 2500 Suburban is not. So, as things are today, 4.5L would be great to increase CAFE in Tahoe/1500 Suburbans. Hummer is going to be sold, and Pontiac is closer to being axed than most think. I could go into detail, but just go to GMInsidenews.com and read all about the GM changes coming. Lutz has commented how Pontiac was going to be a RWD division to compete with BMW, which, the G8 was the first one of many, but now things are changing and so is production plans. I think GM will still offer the Tahoe/Suburban on a truck platform, IF, they can get their cars to all be in the mid 40's mpg's. Which according to the new Cruze due in '11, should not be a problem. Selling those cars in a high volume will allow GM to still produce "gas guzzlers". It would be interesting to see the 4.5L combined with the Two-mode hybrid system in the Tahoe, unfortunately it would probably be $60K or more. Chris

Reported over on GMI, that the next Escalade will be on a stretched Lambda platform. Interesting to see if the Tahoe/Yukon will follow. Seems like the days of the Truck based SUV's are going away like the Dodo. Wouldn't be surprised if the Suburban 2500HD is all that is offered in the largest truck platform, Tahoe/Yuk/Esc, on stretched Lambda's. 1500 Suburban should go away due to CAFE. That way the Suburban could still exist, but doesn't go towards CAFE due to GVWR, but the Tahoe could still have the room and get better mpg's. Since the 4.5L in theory fits where any V8 fits, the Tahoe could get the 4.5L on a much lighter platform and get 25mpg+. Just some thoughts of mine. Chris

Was that Denali HD a truck or SUV you saw at SEMA last year? If it was a truck anybody got any photos of that baby? Just curious.

Im betting that the C3xx trucks/SUV's will still be body on frame, but probably IRS in the SUV's and a multi-link coil sprung rear setup in the pickups.

Supposedly there was talk a while back that the -900's were "supposed" to be IRS but it got canned at the last minute for some reason or another.
