: Top Speed Limiter?
Torque454 08-25-2008, 03:27 AM I was driving home tonight, exited one freeway and merged onto the highway. (is there a difference between a freeway and a highway? I dont know, i just know i was on "james river freeway" and exited onto "HWY 65") but anyways i had this motorcycle behind me, the driver of which decided i wasnt going fast enough at 70 mph and proceeded to change lanes so he could pass me. This is on a hill, a decent sized hill...I dont know the grade. As he got up beside me i sped up, pedal to the floor and we stayed side by side until we got close to the top of the hill where i pulled ahead of him. At this time i am going 85mph, i kept going, got to the top of the hill just before the road flattened out and was going 95 mph. I felt a little "thump" and the truck stopped accelerating. It didnt lose speed (didnt defuel or anything) but it stayed there. Wasnt even at 3,000 RPM yet (but was close). The only thing i can figure is that the thump i felt was the top speed limiter kicking in. I've never had this truck this fast before, i usually dont drive like that, but it was midnite, me and the ole piece of crap motorcycle were the only things on the road so i opened 'er up. I didnt expect a limiter. I didnt think these trucks had one. I am obviously wrong, unless the thump i felt was the truck shifting into overdrive in which case at 2800rpm or whatever it was that it was turning, it not longer had the power to pull the truck beyond 95 on that hill. The neeedle on the speedo stoped dead on the mark at 95mph. Not one under, or over, but right on the dot. It felt as tho i had let up on the throttle and was just holding it at 95, altho my foot was on the floor. I guess i dont really have a question, just wanted to share my story. I really didnt think they had put limiters on trucks back then, i figured it was more of a recent thing, so it came as a shock to me.
rx7145 08-25-2008, 07:59 AM Don't know if this helps but on my Dad's 95 3500HD, 6.5, five speed; she would only go 85.
DieselTahoe 08-25-2008, 08:55 AM my fathers 99 suburban does the same thing but its a gasser.

96GMC6.5L 08-25-2008, 09:02 AM Mine is 85 too.
Dave001 08-25-2008, 09:10 AM I'm not going to find out! Between not wanting to take this truck up to 95, and my 4.10 gears probably having the engine screaming at that speed, I think I'll just read the results here.
jifaire 08-25-2008, 09:32 AM Yep, you have a limiter. You can get the reflash guys to take it out... it's a common request by our German friends.
Me, I don't bother. I have a back-up limiter... rides in the passenger seat. It over-rides the driver.
:)
Torque454 08-25-2008, 10:34 AM I wont bother either like I said I dont normally do stuff like that I am pretty sane when it comes to driving. (my best friend says I drive like a grandma) I will probably never have it that fast again, but it was interesting to see what it would do.
Yes, the speed is limited to 95 mph. My Heath reflash got rid of it. I think the speed limiter is there for liability reasons. If your truck came with Load Range E tires, they might have only had a "Q" rating (99 mph top speed). Spinning these big heavy tires at high speeds can't be easy on them. Low profile Z rated tires handle it much better.

matuva 08-25-2008, 03:25 PM those trucks can go up to 120 mph---- as long as you get the good reflash :p:
Pruittx2 08-25-2008, 03:26 PM Almost all 90+ cars and trucks have them and they are usually set to about the same speed rating or less than the stock tires. ECM controls it.
I had a 1995 Dodge Neon ACR. It had NO Limiter,, I bought mine right off the lot as the Racer that had ordered it back out, and it sat there. Paid $14995 out the door, and that rascle would doo 115MPH topped out in 4th gear!! & still had 5th to go!!!!
ACR was competitive in its class, and featured four-wheel disc brakes, Arvin non-adjustable struts for 1995–1996 models and Koni adjustable dampers for 1997–1999 models, thicker anti-sway bars, fast-ratio steering, heavy-duty front wheel hubs, and a five-speed manual transmission with a numerically higher .81 fifth gear and final drive ratio of 3.94 for quicker acceleration. 1995 through 1997 models featured adjustable camber. The computer-controlled speed limiter was removed from 1995 ACR models, and raised from the standard 190 km/h (118 mph) to 210 km/h (130 mph) for subsequent years. The ACR offers no badging to distinguish it from other Neon models; the only visible differences are a bumper with fog light holes, but no fog lights and a lack of side mouldings. In 1995, the ACR was only offered to SCCA members, but in subsequent years it was available to the general public. The name "ACR" was initially the internal ordering code for the "Competition Package", as it was termed in dealer materials; however, as knowledge of the model spread, the ACR name stuck, and backronyms such as "American Club Racer" were given to it by fans.[who?]
Green Machine 08-25-2008, 04:08 PM I've had my speedo read 95mph, but was probably going 100 or so... because it's not calibrated for my tires i assume. Normally speedo reads 45 but i'm going 50 :/. I let off, didn't feel a thump or anything, but it was to fast in that truck of mine lol.
edzzed 08-25-2008, 04:20 PM my 99 Z28 was limited to 122mph until the hypertech programmer got rid of it. Ed
J.Peart 08-25-2008, 05:31 PM Yup, hit the limiter myself once, got a heath chip since but havent gone fast enough to see if its gone since. going on trip from kelowna to seattle on thursday, so maybe ill put the truck through its paces then and see what it can do now.
Deere Freek 08-25-2008, 09:37 PM (my best friend says I drive like a grandma).
That doesn't say much, my grandma drives like Mark Martin, Jeff gordon on an off day:D
Torque454 08-25-2008, 10:08 PM lol, around here they all drive idle speed :D:D:D Ok, im not THAT bad... but i try to keep it at or below 1500 to 1600 rpm, which translates to about 1 to 1.5 PSI of boost. The less boost it makes the less fuel its using so i keep the boost low. The difference between me and grandma drivers around here is that I do occasionally get a 100% pure-lead right foot. Still not a 95mph foot but a "get the hell outta my way you sorry slow bastard" foot. Never had a ticket tho and i don't need new tires frequently so im not too bad. I'm also courteous tho, if i am holding back traffic, ill pull over and let them pass. No need for me to get a ticket or burn the extra fuel because everyone else wants to run over me. I usually run 5 over the speed limit, i just don't get in a hurry to get there. Oddly enough, I usually get to the the stop light and wait less (if at all) than everyone else who raced on up to it. That should make the guys (that pass me for being slow) feel stupid, but apparently does not or they would change their driving habits too. Stuff like this is bound to be why the older generations (usually) drive slow.

I took my 94 Z28 to 125 with no issues. Started to scare the crap outta me so I slowed down.
I took my 02 A4 quattro to 120 before I realized I was going that fast. Wasn't even WOT yet.
DieselS10 08-26-2008, 12:00 AM I'll never know with mine, I'm not brave enough to push my tires that fast, but if the power is there mine should easily exceed 120 considering my speedometer is exactly 25% slow.
