After hours of reading here on DP I finally made a decision to switch from DEX VI to Transynd. Even though my tranny serial number is past the DEX VI cut off and is safe for DEX VI, after looking at how much DEX VI costs at the dealer and how much Transynd is, it made sense to put the good stuff in. So yesterday I drained my tranny, refilled it with 7 Qts of Transynd and changed the spin on filter.

I've done this service once before at 27,743 odometer miles (or ~ 31,904 actual miles as I have 35" tires), but the first time I used DEX VI. Also, I've been changing my spin on filters at every oil change, with the first change being at 5,000 miles.

Now, to the point of my post... After changing the fluid, I got into my truck and went for a drive. I was AMAZED at how different the tranny shifted. I'm not one of these guys that claims they get better gas mileage when they change oil or that the engine has more power, or... you get the picture. I don't think that changing from one fluid to the other could make a difference that can be noticed by a driver. But I must admit that the tranny shifted MUCH smoother, easier and softer.

One of the reason I was so in tune with how it shifted is because my tranny has been doing some funky stuff last 10K miles. I've had hard shifting, especially when you come to a red light and don't stop completely before you give it gas. Also, I've been driving in a hilly area and seems like it's been hunting for gears, which I understand but the shifts were not smooth.

I guess the question is what helped the most, the Transynd or the new spin on? It's only been 10K since I changed the spin on, so I would have to assume it's Transynd. In any case, thought that you guys that are still trying to make a decision between DEX VI and Transynd could benefit from my experience.

Hey,
Good info ,I am getting ready to do the same thing with the tranny oil change and I was wondering what the price cost of both fluids are.

Thanks

If you do the same service that DieselDogg did you will be fine. If you repeat this two more times Allison will consider that a 100% switch over to synthetic. You do NOT want to flush these transmissions with a machine as they could delaminate your clutches. If you want to do a complete change over you can search for the "Hoot" method. I did this and it is pretty easy. In a nutshell, you disconnect the transmission cooler return line at the transmission and run a hose to a 5 gallon bucket, then you start your truck to pump fluid out. You only run your engine for two or three seconds, then turn it off and top off with new fluid, you repeat this until the fluid going into the bucket is the translucent red of new fluid.:D

I am one of those who switched to Schaeffers supreme 9000 and picked up 2-3 MPG, I also switched to Transynd, and noticed my transmission shifts smoother, before the switch I would refer to it shifting sumwhat awkward on occasion. I suggest the Transynd is the reason your transmission is now shifting better, not the filter.

If your MPG is 16-17 you might want to try different motor oil, thats what I was getting with Mobil 1 and the shell brand synthetic. I switched to Schaeffers sumpreme 9000 and saw 20 MPG first road trip.

Your choice, you gotta change it anyway

I also noticed, after re-filling with TranSynd, how the Allison seems to shifts better and runs a little cooler along with the deep Ally pan...

Good example of the advantage of synthetics:)

Interesting info, but the way it's written, it sounds like a bunch of marketing bs. In any case, it's been over a week now, and my tranny still loves the new fluid. I'm going to drain it and refill it one more time to get more TranSynd in there. I thought I remember reading on here that if you do the drain and refill twice, Allison considers that a 100% change over. Can anyone confirm?

what weight of Schaeffers sumpreme 9000 are you using and where do you get it?

I heard it was three times. Initial change and two more.

I changed my Tranny fluid recently with M1 synthetic. 2005 LLY 2500HD Truck. My transmission has the bad habit of the torque converter draining after sitting about two days. I let the truck sit for 5 days dropped the pan and the internal filter. Measured the fluid I had drained and it came out to be 12 quarts. It took just over 12 quarts to get the fluid to the full mark when the tranny is hot for the refill. I believe the transmission only holds 12.5 quarts for a rebuild. This resulted in a near 100% change.

Dropping the pan and internal filter took 10.5quarts for me. Runnin very smooth with the transynd! I think I just love knowing that its in there!

I run the 5W40, and I think its the only weight? I went to schaeffers.com to look up the closest dealer, called them and had a case shipped to my house. Then I asked I guy I race with to sell me some, I got a 5 gallon pail for $100. But I'm still running the first case I put in 20,000 miles ago
