Actually, the Nicktane is a fuel filter that uses a high efficiency Cat filter, and install under the body behind the cab. It is used to really filter the fuel.

any substantial increases in fuel economy? Does it make the engine run smoother or just a preventative mod to help the motor out?

no filter will increase your mileage in any amount that you can measure. while it will capture more non-diesel particles, the amounts are so small given the amount of fuel passing thru that you won't notice it in mileage. some people comment that they do run smoother. it would be great if it did increase mileage, but IMHO it simply isn't a reality.

so is it worth it? I mean it has its own thread on this forum so it must satisfy some people with it in their trucks???

if you want to see if people like them or not, i would do a search for them. you will find plenty of reading. as i make them my opinion would be biased. many people are fans of supplemental fuel filtering but its a decision you have to make yourself.

Seeing that big yellow filter under the truck is worth it because you will sleep better at night not worrying about talcum sized contaminants floating through your fuel injection system.

Sierra, Diesel fuel is some of the nastiest stuff on the planet. If you plan on keeping your truck, you need to install secondary fuel and oil filters. Diesel can contain lots of small trash particles that increase wear rates and the engines naturally make soot which contaminates the oil. You need secondary filtration or lots of money!

I plan on eventually getting one, when I decide for sure that I am going to keep this truck for a long time...

There is tons of information on this board and an abundance of threads regarding the subject of fuel filtration. Do a search with keywords iso cleanliness and you will find a lot of good info.

I found these two links especially enlightening, as this is how my mind works...technical stuff and numbers....

http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO/OC_Dmax.xls (http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO/OC_Dmax.xls)

And then you can think about lift pumps....plenty of info to be had. Plenty of money to be spent too...

i would do a search for "oil bypass"

Among the reasons GM has given for denying warranty coverage of injector failures is dirty fuel. Since we can’t control what the refiners and sellers put on the market, a bit of self protection in the way of supplemental fuel and oil filtration makes sense. I want to keep my truck for years and years. That’s why I have one of Nick’s fuel filters and an OilGuard bypass filter. These things don’t guarantee a long, trouble free life, but the added measure of protection should help, all else being equal.
