: installing kennedy lift pump
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:21 PM i just installed a kennedy lift pump on my truck. everything on tight and then i started my truck and it ran for aprx 2 min and then died so i started to try to purge the fuel but i have been pumping that thing for about 20 min now and just air is comming out any advice i also tried pumping w/ lift pump on
sfcjones 08-21-2008, 07:24 PM you should have primed it before you tried to start it, if you left the bleeder screw loose and turned lift pump would fuel start to come out....
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:27 PM on kennedy's site he says you dont have to do that it states that the air would be pushed back into the tank????????? thats why i didnt but i also thought about it
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:29 PM should i just keep pumping???????????
RFDEV 08-21-2008, 07:34 PM Open the bleeder & run the pump until you get all fuel and no air. Then close the bleeder and pump the primer until it's hard ... try starting ..
sfcjones 08-21-2008, 07:42 PM ok, if that lift pump will push all the air back into the tank then you need to cycle the lift pump until it pushed all the air out of the lines......or do what RFDEV mentioned, I would start with the lift pump and cycle power for at least 12 times...on edit, you may be sucking air into your system too....
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:47 PM how i have fuel in the tank but its been sitting there on with the bleeder open for about 7-10 min now and no sight of any fuel and i was pumping for about 3-5 min and still all air
sfcjones 08-21-2008, 07:50 PM how i have fuel in the tank but its been sitting there on with the bleeder open for about 7-10 min now and no sight of any fuel and i was pumping for about 3-5 min and still all aircheck your connections, sounds like oyu are sucking air, btw did you hook up the right lines to the lift pump? Just asking as you may have got something mixed up....if that is ok i would put it to stock and prime it and see what happens
tysmith 08-21-2008, 07:54 PM Pumps will not self-prime. Do you have the fliter too, or just the pumps? Did you use John's install kit with pushloc hose?
If you have the filter, that needs to be filled with fuel, or you'll pump forever and never get anywhere. Truck should have started right up, maybe stumbled a bit.
Also, the check in the factory filter head of my '04 is junk, and you need to crank the holy hell out of it before it will start. The primer is useless with a bum check.

CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:57 PM i spliced the pump by itself to the bigger steel fuel line (1/2" i think) and i dont think i have any leaks
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:58 PM but you are saying that the pump wont push fuel to my stock filter under the hood
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 07:59 PM i think that is my issue im not getting the fuel to that filter at all
CrazyLB7 08-21-2008, 08:00 PM should i try to eleminate the pump and run hose to the connections like it was never there and see if the truck will run?
sfcjones 08-21-2008, 08:05 PM i spliced the pump by itself to the bigger steel fuel line (1/2" i think) and i dont think i have any leaksbigger steel line, I owulod have to look under my truck, but I don't remember a steel line, but yet I didn't look for one, I installed a Nicktane fuel filter and the line I removed from the tank wasn't steel....
Rippen 08-21-2008, 08:28 PM Open bleeder cap above fuel filter and run the lift pump. At the same time take an air hose with a cloth or rag and blow some postive air pressure into the tank, this might help the air lock and prime the lift pump if they are air locked. If you still can't see fuel coming out of air bleed above fuel filter you have done something wrong with the install.
Truck should only run for maybe 5 seconds, not 2 mins if something was wrong from the get go.
RI Chevy Silveradoman 08-21-2008, 08:43 PM Moved to Fuel System Upgrade section! ;)
Kennedy 08-21-2008, 08:47 PM 8 times out of 10 I can drop the tank install the billet pickup and pumps, then start the truck with pump off (this is critical) and it will run just fine. 2 of 10 times it will stall and I need to bleed it.
Again, the key is to run the truck with the pump OFF so that the engine can pull fuel and air through it. Then put power to the pump and verify pressure.
Now that you have air, you'll need to unplug the pump, bleed the filter and then pump up the primer hard. Then back to the above instructions.
TxChristopher 08-23-2008, 11:32 AM Seems like you should be able to open the bleeder at the filter in front then apply pressure from an air hose through the filler neck until diesel comes out at the bleeder, then you would be set after that.
