hello, well i'm currently putting my motor together and when setting the crank inplace and getting my gears lined up i noticed that there seemed to be a fair bit of slop between the gears. is this normal? the gear set is not new but shows very little signs of wear just some polishing on the gears.
also i have no idea of the milage on the gear set and the mains were not torqued down but i don't think that would make the play in the gear set.

how much play should i expect?

thanks.

you talking about the timingchain and sprockets or the IP drive gears?

Is this what you are talking about?

If so it can be looked at at this (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/) website.

yeah the timing chain has been replaced with a gear drive set up. just like the one in the picture

the gears were on the motor when i bought the truck, they look to have very little wear on them they just don't seem to be as tight as i expected.

anyone who has put them on new did they fit tight right from the get go or was there some play?

How much slop are we talking about? with four individual gears meshing together to get one end product there'll be a bit of stacked tolerance and remember that they'll be riding on a cusion of oil when running. snap a picture of the gears after a 1/2 rotation to see the total gear set gaps

Motorcycles use cam gears. Do I have to tell you what they rev to?

since the "Idle gears float" there will always be play in between the gears.

Motorcycles use cam gears. Do I have to tell you what they rev to?IMO nothing wrong with normal cam gears,at max crank rpm ,but with this setup the little fellows make at least twice the max crank rpm,7000 rpm ,sides that ye cant compare the two diff engines

I don't see any gears there that'd be turning 7,000 RPM. I counted the idler and crank gear teeth, both are 24. So, one revolution of the crank gear will make one revolution of the idler gears. So, at 3500 RPM, the crank gear and idlers will be spinning at 3500 RPM. Then the cam gear, which I know without counting should be 48 tooth, will be spinning 1750 RPM. I see no where that any gears here would be spinning 7K RPM. There are only four gears. Three of which spin at 3500 RPM (same as the crank sproket in the chain set) and one spins 1750 RPM (same as the cam sprocket in the chain set). Thus, RPM's will be no higher than with the chain set. I plan to go to a gear set for reliability and longevity once I rebuild my engine in another 1-300K, or whenever it needs it.

I agree, the gears are expensive, and I have no plan to change until the engine needs an overhaul. At that point I'll be dumping some good money into the engine anyways, so I might as well go the whole nine yards and put a gear set on it too.

this gear set up is basically the same as a pete jackson gear drive for gassers. I have personally zinged them up to 8k in a drag boat motor with out any issue.

His being a 92, I bet it is a Pete Jackson. They make them for the 6.2's which also fit the first 6.5's.

I have one on my 93, dont remember how much slack it had, dont think it was that bad though ,about what you would expect from a floating idler setup.

well i wasn't able to get pictures of it but i did go to dsg and talk to them.
explained to the guy what was going on, and how much play it had and he told me it was good. basically i was just worrying myself for no reason./
