Hi guys, i'm currently looking to buy a 2008 3500HD for my job. Oilflied in Alberta. A perk of my job is free diesel, I'm not very educated in diesel motors but i've heard that the fourth gen duramax may have issues with our fuel. it is ultra low sulfur diesel, same as sold to farms and large machine operators, but dyed to mark it as wholesale. I haven't found anything in writing here or anyother forums. our CAT 3508's run of it fine i've seen everyother diesel, cummins, powerstroke and durmax 2nd and 3rd gens run with no issue.

what i'm asking is if anyone runs this "rig fuel" and anyone have problems?

2 dealers i've talk to give no hint of problems but it's i big purchase and i want to hear from others!
thx jamie

if it is actually "ulsd" or ultra low sulfur diesel then the 08 LMM duramax will run just fine with it. the fact that it is red means nothing. only has to do with paying taxes i believe. i have heard that if caught with that diesel on public roads it is a big fine

Here in the US, but maybe the rules are different in canada? is it dyed red? red diesel here in the US is designated for "off-road" use only because they take out the road tax. I guess if everyone else is doing it, it's ok right? :D

Everything should be fine but you need to check the laws.. 3508 gotta love it.

Here in the US, dyed red fuel is for offroad use only, it is the same exact thing as regular diesel fuel and home heating oil, but dyed red so that they can check it at DOT stops. I believe the fine is around $10,000 if caught using it on the road.

Just as everyone has said ULTRA Low Sulfur diesel is what the LMM should use because of the new emission control, the famous DPF. Also check your laws about the red dye and off road issue. Hope all works out cuz free fuel is a nice perk.

No Problem at all. I've run it for the last 6000 miles in my truck. My cousin runs "rig fuel" as you Patch Boys like to call it. He's been running it for years and no problems. Other than it's got dye in it :eek:and the price is right.:D(Compliments of the on site engineer)

having farm plates, thats all i run. same as diesel with some red dye in it. on the prarries i think they do some fuel checks to make sure you dont have dyed fuel but here in BC i've never seen one. back in manioba i know they do it quite regular. if its free/cheap, run it!

Just be aware that there are check stops now and then looking for riggers using dyed fuel. I've not been stopped in one, but some guys I work with have had run ins.

And whats everyone do in the patch? MWD here..

Lots of people get checked without even knowing it.

I have watched by-law/transport guys walk down the street or thru a parking lot checking non farm plated vehicles. I think its litmus paper their putting into the tail pipe and checking for color change. All happens while your sitting in a restraunt.
