: 05 GMC 2500HD 8.1/Ally, hows your MPG?
Steve3589 03-05-2005, 08:33 AM I am real close to ordering this truck, it will be CC, 4WD and long bed. Like to hear from others that have this combo and what kinda of mpg you are getting. Only have a 12 miles to work(10 miles at 70mph), so dont want the diesel cause it will never get up to normal operating temps. Also, just dont want diesel.
Thanks
XTOAK 03-05-2005, 12:24 PM Granted, mine is a crew cab dually, but I get between 11 and 13 depending upon how I drive. The worst I've seen is 10.8 and all mileage listed here is calculated....not using the DIC mileage. Although the DIC mileage always shows better gas mileage, I still use and believe the calculated method as I've read the DIC can be off a little.
I get the best mileage when running on the highway as it averages right around 12 to 13....in town it's 11 - 12. The highway mileage is going 55-60 mph...when I get up around 65-75 and running through the mountain pass between Anchorage and Kenai, then it drops a mile per gallon and is always 11 - 12.
You'll love the power and the fact you get almost the same mileage as the 6.0L...I know...my last truck was the 6.0 and I will never look back as the mileage is the same.
I've got a friend who has a thirsty HEMI....now there's an engine that needs to go on a diet.
DEWFPO 03-05-2005, 04:33 PM 90% rural, 10% highway = 11.3
40% rural, 60% highway = 14.1
Overall 13.0
Haven't done a straight highway run yet. I have no city only numbers for you. I've only got 900 miles on the truck. My hard tonneau cover maybe helping the highway numbers. My truck is bone stock. I also have the 4:10 axles.
I was planning on doing some highway runs with the cruise control on, both directions at different speeds, reseting the DIC each time to see what it says.

XTOAK 03-05-2005, 09:08 PM Be sure to get the long bed so you get the bigger tank.....otherwise you'll curse it on the long highway runs as you won't get near as far on the smaller tank.
DEWFPO 03-06-2005, 10:36 PM The 26 gallon tank ought to be outlawed on HD's, it's ridicously small. I find I plan my long trips around refueling stops.

Shark Bait 03-06-2005, 11:30 PM 2004, Extended Cab, Short Box. Mostly City with a little highway. Remote start with warm-up in the winter. Overall average for 11,000 mi is 10.6 (DIC). Highway in the mountains with some slow construction zones with the back full of crap = mid 12s.
ockgator 03-08-2005, 10:37 PM DEW.... 14 mpg with 4.10's!!! my best is 13.9, interstate driving, worst 7.9, hauling 4 cattle and related show equipment back from WPB,Fl. (85 mph w/headwind). 3.73's and 35" tires CCLB
DEWFPO 03-09-2005, 11:21 AM Most of that highway driving (made up ~60% of that number) was at 55 mph, which is rare for me to drive. Normally it's 60-80 mph. Also, all that driving was at >5,700 ft. which leans out the mixture, so I'm sure that affected the number for the better as well. That's probably the highest (14.1) I'll ever see on this rig.
I am planning on a Wester's tune and a free-er flowing intake soon.

vettelovralexand 03-31-2005, 02:39 PM My truck was a single cab long bed 4x4 from 01' it got 9.4 when it wasn't towing and got 9.2 when i did. None of this was highway and i know that i was running uncorrected odometer for the tire swap from 245s to 285s. I calculated it one time and i think it was somewhere slightly below 11mpg when corrected. Truck weighed about 6800lb according to the scales
ockgator 04-01-2005, 01:46 AM I remember back in 80's when we had customer pull into shop and complained about his "big dooley" getting 6 mpg, that was before OD trannys (good old turbo400), he had 454 and 4.56 gears, was his "commuter" vehicle, he worked in Orlando. So even 12 on these new ones looks real good compared to that.
I found mine will get upwards of 60 mpg..... coasting downhill(steep hill), but only momentarily(about 1/3 of 1 second)
big truck big power 04-01-2005, 02:37 PM just get a dmax and get 20mpg
Democap 04-19-2005, 08:51 AM 2001, 8100-6speed with 4:10 gears. The truck in town averages 11-12 in town, on the interstate 12-14mpg. Pulling trailers from 8.5 and up depending on weight. Trailer weights 6100lbs+. Thats not to bad loaded, lots of diesels are in the same mpg range around here that are stock.
jgerni 04-19-2005, 01:40 PM Got 15.8mpg calculated on a 150 mile trip with my K2500hd crew cab 4x4, 8.1L, Allison 3.73. Of course I was driving very conservative. The wife was following in her Suburban with the 5.3L and got 17.5mpg.
The next tank was quite a bit lower since I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it.
aka108 04-19-2005, 07:22 PM '01 8.1 I had got (1 time) 15 mpg from Elko, NV to Las Vegas. Wind was just right. 70 mph. In Vegas 7 to 8 mpg. 'Round Tallahassee and area 10 mpg was the usual. Great engine with an Arab influence.
mtchevrolet 04-21-2005, 11:54 AM I have an 03 8.1 2wd 4:10 Ali and pulling a 32 ft fith wheel from Phoenix to Las Vegas I had the same going both ways. 7.8 please understand if you have ever driven state
rt 93 its up hill both ways. It did better than the 02 6.0 I had. It would about 6-7 with
out the extra power. I am very happy with the 8.1 I would assume I will get 10+ on flat highway.
flxnxj 04-28-2005, 11:12 PM Ive got an 01 8.1L w/ Allsion. Reg cab Long bed. Gets between 9-10 around town about 12 on highway empty, and around 7-8 towing, of course that hammer down style towing a jeep. Cant let the duramax's catch up ;)
Greg Carter 05-05-2005, 09:37 AM This suggestion is for DEWFPO---With a new rig like yours, I would suggest looking into Amsoil Products to increase your milage as well as protecting your investment!! I would suggest for the Big Block---Amsoil--0-30 series 2000--for the front and rear gear--severe gear 75-90-less drag--for your Allison--Torque-Drive--less expessive than transyne and better!! You owe it to yourself and your equipment to check it out!! Good luck----
