: gauge pods? and no glow plug firing (help)
CumminsColeman 03-05-2005, 02:10 AM First off Id like to say hello to everyone I know I know im a cummins guy but ive got my ol girl "12" 83 6.2 1ton dump that I use quite often during the summer.
Ok Im looking to put gauges on the ol girl and I would like to know what you guys are doing... there prolly isnt a pillar pod :( but I would like to run a L & R pyro and trans temp. Where is the cheapest to get this set up?
:help2: Ok lately the glow plugs have been acting up.... well in the fall (ive been frustrated and dont want to work on it in the cold) anyways after you run the truck for a little while and shut it off the glow plugs wont come back on..... Hmmm not sure well Ive taken it out a few times and sometimes the glow plugs still cycle when its running at temp going down the road and a couple times the glow plug light will stay on  NOW there is no action AT ALL no light no "clunk" nothing! I replaced the relay on the fender... nothing! checked power past the fender mounted relay (not sure the name of it) and its got power. The glow plugs are about a year old before this started happening. I dont knwo guys Im lost on what to do:confused: If anyone is around lower MICHIGAN (PITTSFORD) area let me know!
Thanks!
Ian
BlackSmoke74 03-05-2005, 07:24 AM If I remember right, there is a sensor in you water crossover that keeps em from fireing after the water warms up. that may be bad. I cant remember specifics, but pre85 was a different system than 85 and up. I read about this on the GMdiesel website. similar forums. good luck.

I'm not sure the name of it either, for that matter, I don't what its going to help. You need to replace the Glowplug Relay in the valley of the block against the firewall.
CumminsColeman 03-05-2005, 06:50 PM Auto Zone said they didnt carry any other relays other than the one I got... I dont know if the guy was an idiot and didnt want to look it up or what?!?
Im thinking about a direct power with a on/off switch? good idea or bad?
Thanks guys
Ian
Texas Diesel Guy 03-05-2005, 08:17 PM You want a momentary switch instead of a toggle switch, and just make sure you do about a 5 count with 9g, 10 with 11g glowplugs so you don't burn them out. If you have 60gs then you'll have to hold it for a while, but there's not much chance of burning them out.
Here is what they should have sold you, pretty cheap too...http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7EGLOW+PLUG&PageSync=5
Texas Diesel Guy 03-05-2005, 08:20 PM Ok Im looking to put gauges on the ol girl and I would like to know what you guys are doing... there prolly isnt a pillar pod :( but I would like to run a L & R pyro and trans temp. Where is the cheapest to get this set up?You can get a 2 or 3 gauge pillar mount from LMCTruck.com made to fit your truck, catalogue is free, and the pods run $40 for the 2 and $80 for the 3.
CumminsColeman 03-06-2005, 07:13 PM TDG thanks for the help, the link you sent didnt work, but the item i bought was a WELLS part# (on box) SS333 "relay" How do I tell what glowplus I have, I just bought a set from auto zone for a 83 6.2. Do you think a direct power with switch will work?
Thanks
Ian
Texas Diesel Guy 03-06-2005, 09:35 PM Try this one...http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=C001&UserAction=performMoreDetail&Parameters=TRUE%7C%7ERELAY%7C%7ENONE%7C%7EGP-SORENSEN%7C%7ENONE%7C%7EFALSE%7C%7EFALSE%7C%7E7645 55%7C%7E1588%7C%7ESS76%7C%7ENONE%7C%7E%2418.99%7C% 7ECHEVROLET+TRUCK%7C%7EC30+1+TON+P%2FU+2WD%7C%7E19 86%7C%7ENONE%7C%7E0.8%7C%7EEA%7C%7EB
Pull one of the plugs back out and it should say somewhere on the body the rating (11g, 9g or 60g) and the make. If your going to make a manual switch, tie it in to use the factory relay.
D.Camilleri 03-06-2005, 10:33 PM Pull one of your glow plugs and look carefully around the base of the plug for a number, most of the better plugs will have 10.5v old 9g style will have 6v. What brand of glow plug is auto zone selling? I preffer A/C 60g or others that are dual coil self limiting glow plugs.
To wire in a manual glow plug timer on an 83 is a piece of cake. Just did another today on my daughters 86 jimmy. I used some 83 wiring harness pieces and the 83 solenoid to make it simple.
To start, disconect glow plug harness from controller. Cut blue wire where it leads into glow plug solenoid and add a length of wire long enough to make it to dashboard. Get a push button starter switch and mount in dash. Attach lengthened blue wire to one side of switch. Hook other side of switch to ground. When you push button in you will ground blue wire and energize solenoid, glow plug light will light. Make sure that there is 12v to the other terminal on solenoid for system to work.:grd:
stihlcoleman 03-24-2005, 11:35 PM THANKS GUYS!!!!!! ya helped me get the old girl going once again, but NOW i have a ticking noise in the trans after I just put in a new clutch kit, AHHH Oh well it will run. Thanks again!!:)
Now its just to plate it with 24000# plates again and get some dirty work done! Yeah its gutless when hauling a load of wet clay but she still has some torque!!
How do I turn up the pump??:D
Thanks!
Ian "CumminsColeman" Coleman
D.Camilleri 03-25-2005, 09:22 AM Turning up the pump isn't too hard, but it is easier if someone shows you. Are there any fuel injection rebuilders in your area?
To turn up the pump, remove top cover(keep everything very clean and don't allow any dirt to fall in, sometimes it is better to pressure wash first) remover allen head bolt that goes through rear of pump, the bolt has a long pin that goes through the center of a block and spring. With bolt removed, rotate throttle shaft and lift out block with spring. Fuel will drain out the back of pump when you remove the allen head bolt. In the center of the pump body there is a hole or slot on the bottom, shine a light in the hole, rotate the engine by hand with a 15/16 socket on the crankshaft dampener bolt until you see a small 4mm (I think) allen head screw. Turn this screw clockwise about 1/4 turn to increase fuel. Assemble pump in reverse order paying close attention to pump cover, solenoid lever has to engage fuel shut off lever or you will have a problem. The best way I have found to do this is to set the pump cover down about 1/4 inch forward of the pump body and then slide it back into place. While sliding it back you should be able to feel slight resistance of the shut off spring against the solenoid lever. It also helps a lot to do this job with the engine cold, because the parts can be quite hot.:grd: Next you might want to open up your air intake a little.:cool2:
