fastdmax, please, to avoid yet another pissing match, go into the ALlison forum and do some reading, I know you may not want to, but it will be better in the long run. This is really beat to death and the bottom line is there is no correct answer. Each trans has its pro's and con's and each person has his needs.

hey guys whos allison tranny for a duramax you think is better, suncoast vs ats. thanks for all the repliesTalking trannys is like talking politics and religion.

The bottom line is just do it, really the only bad decision is to not upgrade and try and run any more than about +100hp through the stock Ally.

All the manufacturer's make a good transmission.

The key to finding the right one for you is research. Yup, you might have to call a few members and ask.... but qualify your questions as to what you plan to do with your truck.

There is some fantastic information out there and that will help to make the best choice for YOU!

Whether it be Suncoast, ATS or DTT.

I wish you luck in your choice, make the calls to the membership, and see what fits your needs best.

That is the best unbiased advice i can offer.

Fast dmax

Me thinks Diesel 5 gave the best advice.Decide what exactly you want to do with your truck and and a general HP level call Mike he's had his paws on every one Allison upgrade on the market so he'll give you suggestions on what will work to his best ability.

Then go to his shop if possible and get it done.

Good luck my Suncoast level V works for me and Joe Webb at Suncoast also is available and knowledgeable,I just see your in Cally and so is Mike. ;)

You know I haven't herd one mention of the guys over at BD? They seem to be knowledgable via the "Two Guys Garage" spots. I here they have a whole host of goodies for the Maxes. Turbos, Downloader, Exhaust, and Extensive Ally goodies.

They pay for the spots on two guys garage so you darn right they will be knowledgable. You'd think that the largest GM Diesel site would be crawling with them if they were as good as they are..?

Hmm Not sure if that is a knock on there "knowledge" or a rhetorical questions as to why they don't show up on the forums.

When I research the products they seem to be inline with the quality and methods that other shops that show up here use. For example it seems that there allison trannys would be as good as any out there. I am new to the diesel world but the hot rodder in me still enables me to do a comparitive analisys with at least the avail information from the vendors. Granted I have heard good things from other vendors like ATS and Bullydog from other shows like Trucks. Any way I'm rambling at this point.

dmax, I dont wanna take anything away from them, but if you look at it from one perspective, go to a nat'l event and see what the fast guys are using. The fastest dmax's are using ATS and Suncoast units. The best pullers are using the ATS and some Suncoast. Thats the only thing I am saying. I would like to see some more guys run it or at least in my views, I would like to see how/what they do to increase the capacity of the trans.

Understood, I am not trying to argue for them, just wondering out loud looking for input. As for what they do, from what I have seen on there web site http://bd-power.com/gmc/ or shows is similar to ATS and Suncoast. Billet conveter (not just a ring welded to the bungs like the other guys). They claim a 20% increase in clutch friction surface claiming a 500% increase in torque holding. Also they say it can hold 500 flywheel HP in "Heavy Load conditions". I may be wrong but I would assume it could do more unloaded. Also I have seen that if you run there exernal filter set up they have a great warranty.

Anyway thanks for your input. I have been lurking here for a while b4 registering and appreciate the knowledge you offer. I'm not sure I'll ever be in need of an upgrade to the ally. Besides being expensive to do at any level, I don't think it is necessary for the modest power mods I plan. But you all know how it goes, one mod begets another and next thing you know you have over 500hp at you disposal and a tranny that can't hang.

I question the 20% increase in clutch surface unless they redesigned the converter clutch piston or they laid lining on the rivets which is like puting a 9X9 carpet in a 8X8 room. Yes you have more carpet but is it usefull. I also question 500% more torque holding power yet you say it will hold up to 500 crank hp, which comes out about 425 hp at the wheels which by the way, single discs are known to fail. We welcome BD to join in here and explain their product.
