: Heading Towards My 2nd Set Of Injectors

Well after my long trip to FL last week and just for curiousity I plugged in the old predator to check my balance rates, it wasn't good. My number 2 is just a hair under 6 in drive with an occasional above 6. I won't take it in until it hits 6 constantly or above since I know this is the minimum. All the rest were all over the place as low as .2 but most where in the 1-3 range. Base PWM(or something along that line) all read 4 or 5 but the number 2 is at 7, but I'm not sure what those numbers mean(not to mention my little coolant spot I leave everyday as well and my service 4x4 msg that just started popping up)

Truck now has 41,400ish and is around 27months old. My first set of injectors went out at around 25,000. I had secondary installed for most the first 25 and it didn't seem to help, no secondary for these last 16+.

I'm beginning to lose faith in this setup although I know several people have gone a lot more mileage without this issue.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's something else on my engine aiding these problems. I've PM'd this baby since day one with careful detail.

54000 on mine and everything is still working just fine. Only went back to the dealer once for the shift business. I use a pre racor.

Victory Red,

What were the balance rates immediately after they changed the injectors?

Also, do you use an additive?

What dealer did your injectors, VR? I took the trip down by Al this afternoon and after running the TECH2 we found I have 2 injectors at 6 in drive and a noticable nock at idle. We checked them 2 weeks ago and all of them were perfect.

bare with me im sort of a novice. I have the predator, have only had it for about 4 days now. I can check my injector balance rates with it? I assume this is done through the diagnostics menu. Im most likely going to check them tomorrow. What should I be looking for? Should I take any precaution in checking them? Any info...as usual.
thanks

OC,

When I had my injectors done last Memorial Day I checked them when I got home and all were 1.0 or less. This was true for quite a while since I check them on a regular basis, but lately when I stop and get ready to park my idle is rough for a few seconds like it's missing then it steadies out. Yes I use additive almost religously, Schaeffer, FPPF and a few others.

Carbon,

First of all I'm suprised we've never hooked up being so close, but anyhow Boucher in Waukesha did them last time. The only time I've noticed the engine sounding abnormal is in reverse like when I park at work, but the engine has seemed louder as of late as well.

to check balance rates with the predator get the motor up to full operating temp. Plug in the Predator, and after booting up click on diagnostics and then real time data. Pick engine data 2 and scroll down and you'll see balance rates. If memory serves +4mm to -4mm is the minimum for what GM determines to be bad injectors in Park and +6mm to -6mm in drive.
It just one of those things I like to check from time to time. Injector issues from what I've seen has been hit or miss depending. I dont think there's been any consistent pattern to who has a failure or not.

Well that does not sound good. The balance rates on my truck have been very steady for the last 20K miles (the duration that I have had the Predator to monitor them).

I have noticed they change a small amount depending on which brand of diesel I use. I assume that since your in Wisconsin that your still on some form of #1 diesel. Maybe the lubricity is low enough that this is having some interaction. The other comment I will make is it that for a while I was using FPPF. My truck seemed to run rough at times with this additive. If you are currently running this additive, you may want to switch to something else temporarily (as an experiment - just a random thought) and see what happens.

Ever since the problems with injectors became apparent, I have wondered if we might not see failures clustered in certain geographical areas - caused in large part by bad fuel. I guess that we will never know the answer, but it would be interesting.

Carbon04's truck sounds like a 4 cylinder Cavalier with 100k miles while he's idling. A bad case of injector knock.

I couldn't have explained it better myself....................and today it is quiet as can be, go figure.

I too have wondered the same thing. A service guy at one of the major parts distributors in my area said that a GM rep told him that our region of Montana and other mountain states had the highest injector failure rate of any place in the U.S. I don't have any proof to back it up, that's just what he told me.

Around here, I believe all diesel comes from the same source, regardless of branding. It is actually very high quality, although I don't know how it is in lubricity - I supplement that. I'll try to find out from my dealer how bad the failures are. I know that they were trying to keep injectors in stock in case a transient truck broke down.
