Wondering what the change interval is on the one micron filter. Can't be the same as the standard CAT filter, can it? Thanks.

From Nick himself in another post:

that's why its only an option. i've had many request it. at one micron it will catch MUCH more than twice of what the cat filter does. given that the life will be about doubled and it holds 4 times the contaminents, its not really much more expensive. especially considering its immune to cold weather. this is a big thing for guys running biodiesel too.

I would have to assume that the 1 micron filter is good for 40,000 miles before replacement!

Does the 1 micron filter fit on the same Nicktane base?

It does fit, however you need to change the thread insert.

I'm due for a filter change and I want to order the 1 micron filter. Does it come with the required thread insert or what do I need to do? Thanks guys.....

I guess I'm SOL then. The Nicktane kit doesn't have a removable thread insert. If I remember correctly the base & filter threads are machined as one piece.

I just installed the new head that Nick offers because the old Permacool head corroded through. The new head has a removable insert for the head, just screw it out. The one that comes with it is for the CAT filter.

Why a 1 micron when a 2 will do just fine? Later! Frank

The 1 micron has a synthetic filter media that doesn't react to temperature change, unlike the CAT filter. That alone made me go with the 1 micron on my kit, as it gets pretty cold here in Minnesota.

The synthetic media may not react to the cold, but it wont stop the fuel from waxing/gelling and plugging the filter when it gets -25 F or lower.

I never said it would, however the synthetic media won't crack when it gets into sub-freezing temperatures, nor will the bindings in the weaves separate at those temperatures, as many cellulose or cellulose/glass filters tend to do. They don't all crack and separate at sub-freezing temperatures, but it's one less risk that I'm more than happy to avoid.

If it catches twice of what the Cat filter does, then won't the filter get have only half the life of the Cat filter? Bottom line is that it is filtering more than the Cat filter even if it does have to be changed out more often.

no it wouldn't. the filters aren't built the same. the 1 micron filter will hold a LOT more junk than the cat. the structure of the media allows it to hold more before it needs replacing. obviously it catches much more so i wouldn't expect to get 40k out of it. a lot of it depends on the fuel you put through it.

example- i can run 40k on a cat filter no problem. i've only ran one that long in testing, usually i change them at 20k. i know some people that have had an issue at 20k. as with anything with variables there is no magic mile # where the filter will be used up. i would expect to get a little more out of it than the cat filter. i think double would probably be pushing it.

I usually change my cat yearly; maybe 20k miles. I wanted to try one of these but I have so many cat filters it doesn't make sense. I'll still try one someday.
