: VERY weird message in DIC
dieseldan723 08-17-2008, 02:55 PM Yesterday I got in my truck after not driving it for 1 week. When I put it in 'R' to back out of the driveway I had a message in the DIC that said something like "Shift Range Restricted" or something like that. I have never seen that before. Anyone know what that means, or what the actual error is? I did not get any check engine light or anything, and it went away when I put it back in 'P' and then back in 'R' again.
TIA

Nsbu switch on the way out.

Is that a for sure sign? I had the exact same thing happen just once a couple weeks ago, but its been fine since. Can anybody else chime in if thats a for sure sign of the nsbu switch going out?

What is the NSBU switch? Is this something I can replace? How much does it cost?
01Dmaxdriver 08-18-2008, 08:17 AM Did the message come on and stay on ? I know if my truck sits for a while when I put it in gear I get a delayed engagement. I have heard of a lot of guys having delayed engagement and a message after sitting. If the it had no delay it is probably the NSBU switch on the side of the transmission behind the shift lever.

I had let the truck sit for 1 week. Once I put it back in PARK then into REVERSE it was fine. It has been fine since. Hopefully that's all it was.

Neutral Safety Back Up Switch, located on drivers side of tranny. It's a very common problem, cheap fix and easy to do yourself.
DDan, I would just keep an eye on it and see if it comes back again. I think you may have just had a delayed engagement like said. Another common issue is you will lose the indicator light on the dash, and you don't know what gear it is in. Eventually you will be stuck in 3rd gear only, with no reverse if it does go out.

Good to know, I will keep an eye on it. Thanks.

OK, like you said, the dash lights are now out. I was prepared to dive into the dash and replace the light bulb then I stumbled across one of my own posts! I still haven't seen the error except for that one time. Is there a way to tell if they are related or if the NSBU is going out? Truck seems to drive fine without any issues other than not knowing what gear you are in.

Usually when the dash lights quit, it is the NSBU switch. From what I have heard, that's your best bet.

I am not sure on this point, as once I had my transmission computer removed from the truck, and the truck would go into reverse and what I believe is 3rd without the computer there at all. So you could probably just remove the computer if you ABSOLUTELY HAD to back the truck up. And didn't have a new NSBU...
javelina80 05-19-2010, 05:27 PM It has happened to me several times. What is says is "Range Shift Inhibited". It is in your owners manual. Over the last couple of years it has happened to me a few times. I just return it to park and every time it has corrected itself. I haven't replaced my NSBU switch. Owners manual made it seem like a common issue. Nothing to worry about IMO.
WHTDMAX06 05-19-2010, 05:55 PM Yea it happens sometimes when I shift too fast while snow plowing from forward to reverse or reverse to forward. I think it just keeps you from harming the transmission.
Brad92 05-19-2010, 06:26 PM I bought my NSBU switch brand new from Rush Truck Center for $51. That was my closest Allison dealer. The gauge cluster shift lights not working right, door locks not unlocking when shifting into park, range shift inhibited, big clunk when shifting into forward or reverse, staying in 3rd gear are all NSBU switch symptoms.
