With all the talk about fingersticks and EGR blocker plates I've noticed no one has brought this up, or so I have found.

Say you block the EGR and use a finger stick, the EGR is still plugged in to the little door is still openning and closing right? I mean the computer stil thinks it's there and still uses it just doesn't get the "real" feedback any longer. So any and all the soot that does make it in that way will build up over time in that EGR pipe. Now say after all this time you have to get an emissions check and without the EGR functioning you don't pass. So you have to reinstate the EGR system but now you've got a bunch of soot built up waiting to be blown back into the motor.

Is this a likely scenario or will not much soot be able to enter the EGR pipe since it's blocked at the other end? Or do I not completely understand how the fingerstick works? Someone edumacate me :help:

I believe with the EGR blocked off the soot will go out the exhaust where it should go in the first place, instead of recirculating through the motor and oil.

correct me if I am wrong.. thats about the extent of my knowledge on that subject.

i dont have much knowledge on the topic either but ive got to disagree with briano. not that I have any real grounds to do so on. i think all that soot is gonna collect in that egr pipe. i THINK, and I emphasize think, someone posted a while back that when they removed their plate and stick combo they blew a lot of smoke for a little while but then returned to normal. not too sure though, ill shut up now.

you could very well be right..I think I remember that thread

The blocker plate is installed before the EGR cool down pipe. With no flow in the pipe leading up to the blocker plate I don't think there will be any appreciable soot build up in the pipe leading up to the blocker plate.

And yes, the EGR valve is still running in and out. Needs to or it would set a code.

Can't we just unplug the motor since all is plugged and stick installed?

The EGR is also controlled by a backpressure sensor which cant get any other simulated pressure, Yes? Removing the EGR is one step but what about the pressure sensor which tells the egr to act. with my cat removed, the pressure sensor tells the egr to hunt, sending a code. Any help would be great guys.

You didn't read my previous post. The ECM monitors the position of the valve and if the valve does not go to the position commanded a code is thrown.

There is no backpressure sensor. The EGR is controlled by the ECM based on RPM, Temp, pedal position and a few other things. What sets the EGR codes is a test done by the ECM once per ignition cycle. That test looks at the MAF sensor to see if the amount of fresh air coming into the engine changes when the EGR valve is open/closed. If it changes enough, the EGR is deemed OK.

That is a different code than the 401 404. Though you might also see the 401 and 404.

now being a newbie here i am not sure how the code settings works.. does the engine light come on? if so how do you get it reset? would i have to take my truck to a shop and get it done? i dont have anything to read codes... so im guessing i would have to spend a lot of money on the computer or take it to the shop correct?

The codes will clear themselves after several ignition cycles if the problem is fixed and stays fixed.

So back to my original question, is the concensus that no soot will build up in the EGR pipe or that some will and if unblocked all that cr*p will blow through the motor?

The blocker plate is before the egr pipe. No exhaust in pipe,no soot in pipe, no soot in motor.
Ya know recently I unplugged my egr and it does run better as expected however my exhaust doesnt seem as full as it should. It would cycle back and forth before and now it still cycles less but never fully opens and stays open. Is this the garret vanes operating and changing exhaust tones or is it because the tube is still not blocked to the egr? I have ATS 4" kit with muffler which amplified the surging sound. Thanks for any help guys.

Why does it come from the factory with all this "soot" going throught the motor if its not good for the motor?

It's a cheap easy way for them to pass the upcoming emissions standards. I guess with all the crap going through the motor it'll cause the truck to wear out faster and they'll sell more trucks too...

PAYPAL to Kroutman1@comcast.net Better yet Search EGR Block plate threads right here on this site. Then you'll not only get a plate... but better understand why you should get it. Be ready to read though!

you got that right.
i took my plate off two days ago for a trip to the dealer, it had a nice black soot circle on it.
drove it home yesterday and that was the first thing i put back on.
thanks again Kroutman, nice plate.
