Hey guys... I am considering a local Ford F250, 7.3L, Crew Cab, 4x4, with 136,000 miles. He wants $21,900. Seems high to me.

What are some common failure points on this vehicle? Fuel injectors? Transmission? Transfer Case? Etc.

136K is a LOT of miles and I want to make sure I know what kind of repairs I could be in for.

Thanks.

This seems like too much money for that truck with so many miles. As for repairs it all depends on the previous maintenance. You can plan on replacing the tranny sometime in the near future if it hasn't been done already. If it has been maintained well 136,000 really isn't that many for one of these trucks. Take a look at thedieselstop.com for all the info about these trucks. Good luck.

Yeah... I have a pending registration in with TheDieselStop. Their "automailer" seems to be really slow or something. Still haven't gotten the registration confirmation and it's been hours.

I had this problem when I tried to subscribe as well. I even e-mailed the moderator trying to find out what the problem was. It turns out that my e-mail filters were set too tight and it was sending their replys to the junk mail bin which was emptied automatically. It took me quite a while to figure out the problem because the messages were deleted as soon as they were received. Still take a good look around over there even if you can't sign in. Look in the 7.3 engine and drivetrain section and just page through the old posts. You'll learn all you ever wanted to know plus some!

Dameon, 136K is not that much. I have 170,000+ on my 1996 and still running strong-not touched. I would not worry too much about the 7.3 reliability. I have been driving a 1992 F350 7.3 with over 260,000 non-turbo that is still running like a champ. I think that is the most abused trucks I have ever seen and still is running. Starting and stopping all the time w/in 1-2 miles. It is a farm truck that has hauled hay, wet raps, hogs 2-3 days/week (25-27 hogs @245lbs), full chopper boxes of corn silage and hay silage. The guy I worked for loved this truck so much he bought a 2002 F350 with flatbed and uses it for the same thing and abuses it the same and runs strong. Believe it or not, @ 136K the truck is really just starting to break in. The 7.3 is a proven engine, and I also have a buddy in Franksville, near Milwaukee with a 1999 F350 7.3 w/automatic w/95,000 miles and hauls cattle every week and has never touched it yet. Each truck is different though, but the 7.3 are known not to be touched until 250,000 miles, but that is without mods and stuff like that.
