: Allison behind a Cummins!

I was at a local shop picking up my LS6 stroker and I noticed a Cummins sitting in a Ford. They were currently putting an Allison trans behind it. Does the Allison use a stand alone computer system? The mechanic told me it was a stand alone system. Has anyone seen this done before?

Allison uses a standalone TCM to control it. It could be put behind a blown big block in a hot rod if you wanted.. that would be sweet!

My friend runs several School bus garages for First Student the bus company owner. He told me the buses have the 7.3L Power stroke with Allison Transmissions. He said Allison calls it the 2000 series but it is exactly the same as the 1000 in his 02 Chevy Dmax/Allsion.

1000, 2000, 2400, they are all pretty similar. The bigger models have a bigger parking paw and I believe a higher weight capacity. I worked on a Snap ON truck yesterday with a 24V Cummins and an Allison behind it, didn't see what series it was, but it was probably a 1000 or 2000. It had the TCM mounted close to the trans on the frame rail.

I've got a diesel pusher motorhome with Cummins "260" and Allison 1000 trans. Very common motorhome setup. I would like to boost the motor a bit, say from 520 ft.lb up to 600 or so. Looks like the Allison will not handle it though. Ideas?

Add a transgo kit to it and either a single or triple disc converter. Then give that cummins some power.

Thanks for the info. Wouldn't that run what, upwards of $2k to do? I would really rather just boost the engine up a little, without tearing into a perfectly good trans at this point. Not looking for a tire smoking motorhome, just a little more hill climbing speed.

Hopefully as will all things the cummings motor will phase out in late '06 early '07 and then Mercedes will take over. I don't think; actually I know you will NEVER see a cummings motor in an HD with a Bowtie badge on it!!!

Better not, The Duramax is definetely holding it's own and not stopping anytime soon.

Not from the reports I have read, I could be wrong but I have read numerous articles on this and I think it will go away. Just a matter of time till something new hits the market. I will see if I can find that article that I read about a month ago or so that stated that motor was history soon.

It could be put behind a blown big block in a hot rod if you wanted.. that would be sweet!A stand-alone system would be sweet, but doesn't the tranny take input from the motor (TPS), VSS , etc? Shift points are much different from a diesel to a gasser, plus you have T/H mode......just wondering how a stand-alone system would account for that?
:help:

I just had to put this in because it made me laugh.... :nutkick:

Hey GMC2500HD!

You probably won't even need to duck next time, cause that last one went right over your head!!!! :)

No company called "Cummings" has ever produced diesel engines to my knowledge.

But this company named CUMMINS makes some really respected buzzin' half-a-dozens that find their way into the Dodges.

I had heard, ford bought cummins, and ford will soon be running the cummins (because 6.0 power strokes are garbage). This is why dodge is going with the benz.

From what I have read, the contract between Dodge and Cummins ran out. That is why the switch. Ford will end up with Cummins.

Ford owns no part of Cummins, nodda dimes worth. This has been a rumour for some time now. This is why there isn't and never has been any Cummins 5.9s in Ford pickups. The new 6.4 PSD will be out in the model year '07 to replace the 6.0 liter.........SWH...

Yup Diesel Dually has it right. MB owns Chrysler and they claim that thats why their product is better than it used to be but i havent seen it yet.

Judging by the downfall of quality apparent in the later model Mercedes, most Benz enthusiasts would say Chrysler has had a detrimental effect. Probably still an upgrade for Chrysler, though...

Mercedes builds some of the weakest transmissions I have ever worked on. I have been a Mercedes trans specialist since 1972. If they decide to build one for the Cummins it will probably fail misserably just like their car transmissions.:exactly:

So when my SDL tranny pukes, do you have any neat, high-tech doodads for it?

WilliamBos
05-05-2005, 11:08 AM
Well, their tranny's may suck, but I can't wait for a clone of the mighty "MBE4000 " to be sittin' between the fenders of a RAM. I would actually consider buying one then, but won't as long as they have a Cummins under the hood!!

Take care!!

How hard is it to put an Allison 1000 behind say 99' 24V Cummins diesel??

smoop

Wolford,

The answer to your question is: not impossible, but IMHO impractical. The Allison
1000/2000 series is used behind 6.6/8.1 GM, 5.9 Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deer, & Mercedes and others. All except the GM uses SAE #3 hsg with block adapters, crank adapt., & flexplates. I aquired all of the stand alone controls necessary and machined an adapter to use the GM-1000 series, But, either way you would need to use a 2" body lift for floorboard clearance, bottom line 2WD gets very expensive, 4WD gets very-very expensive. After some thought I came to the conclusion that this would not warrant the time and energy. Lots of time, lots of $$ to what end? A modiefied 618 Dodge trans will perform behind 800+HP
& 1400+ torque. Unless one has nothing better to do the novelty and braggin rights " I done it" is not worth it.
