Nice site you all have here. I have already used the information to resolve a few issues.
I have found quite a few turbo threads, but am still a little un clear on a couple things.
Am getting the dreaded blue smoke and after look around a bit and discovered a lot of oil in the intake, after the turbo and found quite a bit of play in the impeller shaft. Not comming through the EGR valve.
Do I have enough info to determine that the turbo needs a rebuild?
How do I for sure identify my turbo? (92’ 6.5 TD)
Is there a step by step rebuild instruction thread?

If anyone has any useful links that they want to e-mail directly, feel free. rndrob@gmail.com (rndrob@gmail.com)

Thanks much,

Rob

The turbo should have a tag on it somewhere that tells you what model it is. Id guess a GM3? May have to take a rag and wipe the tag off to read it. Just make sure the turbo is cool, lol. The smoke could just be from a bad CDR valve (the tuna can shaped decide on top of the passengers side valve cover and attaches to the turbo intake through a tube.

If the oil is in the intake of the turbo as well, bad CDR valve, if the oil is in the intake manifold and not in the turbo inlet, you may have bad seals, if there is a lot (and I mean more then a few milimeters, more then 3/32" is bad) movement in the shaft the bearings could be toast.

I'm pretty sure Torque is right about it being a GM-3.

You can rebuild yourself (Ebay has kits), take it in, get a reman ($$$$) or do a turbo swap if you feel you can take on that task.

Good luck.

Go through the Diagnostic checklist, there are some points that ask you to check the turbo. Those steps are "how you check the turbo".

The CDR may not be bad... it's doing it's job of only maintaining vacuum level in crankcase. It has no control over oil entry into the intake. Gotta check CDR info in the FAQ's for checkout procedure. That's the Tuna Can that is...
