Hey everyone! I struggled to find pics of painted wheels so I figured I would post mine up for people in the same boat as I was. I will definetely be coating these things black the next time the tires come off for replacing but for now this does just fine!

Bought 4 cans of semi gloss and one can of clear, it was dupli-color acrylic enamel.

Here is before;

Nice. I thought about running rings on mine but I go off-road in deep sand occasionally and figured rocks would get in and rattle and drive me crazy.

I think it was your thread that inspired me to finally do this lol

I had tons of little things stuck in them when I took them off, but luckily all from on road stuff. It looked sick without the rings as well, but like this since I hard park it more :-p

I love this look as well. I did the same thing on my '67 C-30 and my Z71. It seems everybody else is going bigger with wheels these days, but stepped back to 15" rallys and new style center caps on my Z71.

looks great!
Were the tires off, or did you just masked the tires?

it is officially a winter project for me. I was curious what they would look like on my white truck. Now I know:D

I painted the rims and then had the tires installed on my Z71, but I masked and painted the ones on my '67 dually.

Those look good. I have the scotch pads and paint in the garage and ready. I just mounted the 285/75's on my stock wheels, so I'm ready to paint them black. I'm doing something a little different with the center caps though. I'll post up pics in a few weeks (after I finish the big block swap in my chevelle).

I love painting my stockers...I do it to just about every pair of wheels ive owned..even aftermarket wheels.

Yea I kept my tires on and just masked them closely, I'll most likely have them powdercoated when I get new tires in a few months. Now that I've tried the black I can justify the money to get it done right lol

I'm thinking of getting white lettering on the tires, can't decide though. Also have to figure out sizing and such, I'll be towing big loads a lot next race season and putting lots of miles on it so I can't see putting anything crazy like some of you guys do. But it does look badass lol

I think I'm going with a dark gunmetal color on mine. Haven't quite decided yet. I don't know if I'm going to put the rings back on or not yet. Has anyone painted those or can they be successfully painted since they are chromed? How does the painted wheels hold up when they rebalance or dismount and remount tires? Is everyone painting them inside and out? The reason I ask is because when you rotate tires, you'll end up with non-painted sides facing out eventually if you don't.

I only painted the outside as it was mounted on the truck. I don't have to worry about rotating the tires front to back b/c of different tread paterns front and rear.

I think you'all helped me make the decision. I called around and the cheapest powdercoat I could find was $100 a wheel :eek:so I think I may try the paint. I have to question the same thing HaulinBass asked. How does it hold up to balancing?

I'm guessing the process...degrease, scotchbrite, clean, tape off, 3 coats black, 3 coats clear? Sound good?

That's exactly what I did exept I used 180 grit sandpaper vise scotchbrite b/c of rust.

Black painted stock rims with beauty rings do look good. I my just have too look into that for my truck if my chrome simulators ever get messed up.

Looks good, but might look better without the out beauty ring?

I have been thinking about doing this.
How does the paint hold up in the winter ?
Is this something that has to be done every spring.
I live in michigan. So we get salt on the roads with a little of snow thrown in for good measure.

I live in michigan as well and ive had mine painted since march so i only had to go thru one snow with them but they have seen 13k miles and have some small rock chips and what not but there holding up well. i used duplicolor wheel paint.

Looks good. I will have to look into doing this. Seeing as I have to take the front wheels off to look into fixing the anti lock brakes.

Hey DirtyT, what color did you paint your wheels? Is that black or the dark gunmetel grey? Did you also paint your centercaps? I was thinking about doing that on mine, centercaps and all. I noticed there are no beauty rings on yours either, did they have some to begin with and you left them off or did they never have any at all?

its gunmetal but im going black very soon with them the gunmetal contrasts with the black to much. i never had trim rings my truck is a w/t i dont have very many options on it. And painting the center caps adds a lot more work to the deal. i taped off every lug nut on the cap so they would stay black but the cap would be gunmetal. Thats why i have not painted the wheels black yet im not looking forward to that much taping again.

here is a newer pic of them that first pic was taken the day i painted them this is from last month.

They kind of look like the Rockstar dually wheels, maybe the color looks funny in person but in the picts I think it looks sweet. Buuuuuutttttt, I was wondering what the color contrast between the black and gunmetal would be. I hate to go and paint two wheels up in different colors just to see what it would look like but I guess I'm going to have to.
