: When parking a dually, is it legal to...
getpower 08-05-2008, 03:38 PM take up two spots?
I was reading that most of you guys do it, but I am wondering if a cop saw your truck like that if they would do anything about it or even if they could to anything about it.
I know that most cops understand that the truck is huge and that you have to accomodate, but I am wondering if they can do anything.
ryanryan 08-05-2008, 04:33 PM They can't do anything on private property.

Personally, I think taking two spots is a bit inconsiderate. Unless you have a really small spot and the truck just physically takes up two spots. I also back in whenever possible because it keeps the rear fenders away from most door activity from your neighbors. My $.02 worth.

NC Hauler 08-05-2008, 04:55 PM I was going to say I've never taken up two spots, BUT, there has been a time or two, due to length of my truck and size of parking space, where the front end or the back end might have been "slightly " sticking over into a parking place either in front of me or behind me. Most times I park away from others so that THEY won't put a "ding" in MY truck. Unless you were at a hospital or blocking a Handicap parking space, I can't see a cop saying anything to you, unless your truck is blocking him out at Dunkin Doughnut:D, or Cracker Barrell
Woodroe 08-05-2008, 09:36 PM If you're gonna take up two spots, doing it at the furthest end of the lot would be appropriate. I always take up two spots, but it's usually at the far end of the WalMart parking lot. It's not like I take up two handicap spots! That's inconsiderate. I'll take two at the end of the lot. My fat a** can use the extra walk and nobody cares since you're so far away.

As long as these trucks are and as big as the turning radius is, it also makes easier to get back out on the road.

:exactly::agreed::agreed::exactly: As another poster said, parking lots are private property and the police have more important things to do then to look for Duallys taking up two spaces anyway. I spent way too much $$$ than to have some inconsiderate jerk slam his door into the side of my truck.
ColbyColorado04 08-05-2008, 11:11 PM I ALWAYS take up two spots, But I also dont park up at the front. I usually park toward the back of the lots so im not taking up spots that could be easily filled. Doesnt matter where I go around here, none of the spots are long enough for a CCLB. call me inconsiderate or w/e but im not gonna take a chance of some Jack@ss hitting my truck while backing out of his/her spot or pulling forward. Ill take my two spots in the back of the lot. 95% of people are too damn lazy anyways to park next to me and walk.
christopherglenn 08-05-2008, 11:18 PM got a parking ticket at the mall from the city of modesto for parking in 2 spots. pulled forward so I wasn't blocking the way..

That's a first.....
I usually take up two spots too, but as others have said....at the far end of the parking lot....I have found in a lot of parking lots now, the spaces are just too damn narrow to fit the truck in.
mtnmn 08-06-2008, 02:28 PM I don't think that it's legal - BUT if you do as others have stated and park out in the back 40, you shouldn't have any issues... Unless it's getting close to the police station's annual Christmas party, and they're looking for funds to hire the strippers...
Hey Chris - Modesto cops must be planning their party already! :D
getpower 08-06-2008, 02:35 PM I think you can fight that because its private property.
Rosey 08-06-2008, 03:12 PM I think you can fight that because its private property.
:exactly:....... I'm thinking that it had to be some type of security officer that wrote it, ("rent-a-cop"??) and wonder if the "parking ticket" was actually legit or a warning?? I'm a retired motorcycle cop and NEVER wrote parking tickets in private parking lots unless I was called to respond about something which affected public safety like someone parked in a fire lane, etc.
BlackMariah 08-06-2008, 04:16 PM They can't do anything on private property.
X42 :)
I always park away from people.
The non-dually owners find themselves in the same boat. The spot may be wide enough, but often it won't accomodate a longbed crew cab.
01Duramax6spd 08-06-2008, 08:04 PM I take up 2 spots a lot with my SRW. I figure it keeps people farther away from my doors. If the want to hit my flatbed I really don't care cause they will be the ones crying about the damage .
Never had to park my dually around cars yet.
dreamer7 08-06-2008, 08:28 PM My Mom did and she couldn't drive a dually worth squat. Never was ticketed tho.
carhauler 08-06-2008, 08:35 PM I know this will get me in trouble But..........Good Lord! I am guilty to I took the time to read this post.
01Duramax6spd 08-06-2008, 08:43 PM I've pulled into a parking lot with my 33'er and taken up like
8-10 spots . You done that too?

DrededSS 08-06-2008, 08:43 PM I live in Dallas, so it's hard to find good parking a lot of places. At the mall and walmart, I usually park out with the rest of the big trucks. At work I park up front but back in to keep away from door dings. The front end of my truck hangs into the parking lot, but everyone knows me well enough to not worry about it. Besides, if they want to "rub" my bumpers, they are more than welcome!
DrededSS 08-06-2008, 08:44 PM I've pulled into a parking lot with my 33'er and taken up like

I did that at McDonald's right before the lunch rush
dmaxscott 08-07-2008, 05:28 PM I always take 2 spots as far as my wife will tolerate away from the door. All these honda and toyota, no driving people around Chicago will door ding the crap out of your truck.
I don't do it to tick all the good folks off but I want to keep my truck as nice as I can b' when their is damage I am the one that has to pay for it not someone that dents it and drives away.
The other day I was at a store waiting for my wife. I was parked not even close to the door but off to the side. This lady was all cursing my out and being all nasty. I just waved and said life is to short. What I wanted to say was she need to park way out and walk in b' she was a fat butt old lady and needed to walk. But I did not say that I just smiled and waved kindly. I seriously did. I mean come on.
And you know what as much as these cost we need to take care of them.
Turfmower 08-07-2008, 07:39 PM Most of the times I park in 3 or 4 spaces 99% of the time I'm pulling a 18 foot trailer. If have the trailer off there isn't any way my truck will fit in just one spot with west coast mirrors.
BillB3857 08-07-2008, 09:10 PM I center mine between the lines. If the lines are narrower than my truck, I take up 3 spaces!
Dragon 08-07-2008, 11:04 PM A guy I know absolutely hated someone taking up 2 spaces, especially a small car. He used to drive around the parking lot until he found a vehicle in 2 spots and pull his old beat up junker as close as he could to the driver's door so the person couldn't get it open and would have to get in through the passenger's side.
christopherglenn 08-08-2008, 10:51 AM Thats why I have tow chains in both trucks... I may repark the junker in another parking lot:D
ryanryan 08-08-2008, 02:44 PM I've pulled into a parking lot with my 33'er and taken up like
8-10 spots . You done that too?
I've done that with my 28' enclosed ... took up at least 6 or 7 spots.
komh98 08-09-2008, 01:25 AM You should see there faces when I pull up in Wal-Mart with my 40' trailer. They don't like it too much but they can get glad in the same pants they got mad in.
rota92 08-09-2008, 07:43 AM I always take up two spots when I'm worried there will be asshats around. But I never part close, usually I park far enough away that when I take up one people seem to get the idea.
Two cops were in a parking lot last saturday night when I backed in and took up two spots, no heat from them and I've never been asked to move lol
I think as long as you're far enough out, it's okay to take up 2 spots whenever you please. My daily has dents all over despite parking the best I can, but the truck doesn't have one on it :D

I screwed up one time getting coffee at a McDonalds and ended up pulling thru the drive thru with a 33' 5th wheel on the back, that got some looks:)
drhutch 08-10-2008, 02:27 PM Like others I park way far out, usually don't have to cover two spots but if I do it shouldn't bother anyone, except for the ahole that left a note on the window once and then I was parked as far away as the lot would allow and there wasn't another car for at least 100 feet. Just don't know about some folks.
mojo0107 08-15-2008, 03:55 PM Hospitals are the worst...I was visiting the other day and the lots were painted off for honda's, So I dropped the wife and kids off at the front door and went out to the back of the lot and tried to park, I was wide enough to take up two wide w/o trying and then I was so long I was two deep...and then the Lanes were so Narrow I when everyone else filled the parking lot up I had to drive over the curb and a sidewalk to get out...
But that's Y I've got my baby!
dunerjim 08-22-2008, 12:11 AM I parked in far corner of the lot, angled in taking two spaces. Got a ticket for "angle parking." I measured the space, and the width of the aisle, if I parked in a single space, and anyone parked next to me, I could not get out. Complained, but paid ticket, no response from city. I don't shop in San Bernardino anymore, no matter what vehcile I'm driving.

I got stuck doing the same thing in my CCLB SRW. I don't know who's the idiot who thinks cars are the only thing that park intown but they need there ass kicked
cbrew2001 08-23-2008, 12:36 AM Depending on where I'm at and size of parking lot sometimes I take up 4 parking places. But most of the time just one.
TheBigRedTruck 08-23-2008, 08:44 PM I just use one and a half!!! Yes, Its my daily driver and the jeep's on the back 90% of the time!!!! Dimmerhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=71076&stc=1&d=1219538576
Wingnusa 08-24-2008, 04:36 PM 99% of the time I back in to 1 spot and park as far out as I can. I need the walk and......sssshhhhh....my DW needs some too.

I thought that Sam's Club and other business parking lots were private property. How could the city give you a ticket for angle parking? When I am in my truck, I, like the others, park in an open area and try to stay between lines--truck is 8' wide and the parking spaces are 8' wide. I also back in when I can. When I'm pulling the trailer, I try to keep from inconveniencing anyone but I take up a lot of parking spaces. I think if I got a ticket for taking up more than one space, I'd complain to the management. I still don't see how the San Bernardino police have jurisdiction on parking in a private parking lot. Note: I think that police have jurisdiction anywhere on handicap parking.
ColbyColorado04 08-25-2008, 12:58 AM Actually "Most" retailers rent the property. The lots and roads behind the building are public property. If your vehicle is broken into your not going to go after the retailer, your going to call the police. If your car is hit by a cart (most retailers have disclaimers stating damage is not their responsibility).
i try to be as considerate as i can. the truck is big. when i know it is going to be a hassle i use my fuso cab over. my truck is a 4 door dually utility.

(I don't mean to hijack the thread--just this comment, then I'll quit) In California, my son's car got hit in a strip mall parking lot. He called the police (San Bernardino County Sheriff contracted to the city of Chino Hills) and was told that they didn't have any jurisdiction in that parking lot since it was private property. He was told that it was the same as if there were an accident in your back yard.
DieselCash 08-30-2008, 09:52 AM It is illegal to take up more than one spot. But that does not stop me from doing it. My truck most of the time does not fit inside one parking spot. Either the front of the truck or the back of the truck hangs over out of the parking spot. Going from side to side is the same, it barely fits. Usally I have both outer tires almost on top of the lines. It also matters were I park. Some places have bigger parking spots than other places. I almost always park toward the end of the parking lot away from everybody anyways. I need the exercise!
