Please share your experiences with Guy Trip's (Trippens) Tow Tune-- I'm primarily interested in LB7 reviews...

In what terrain/elevation/climate have you run this tune? What weight were you towing? How was the power, especially on mountainous inclines? Smooth delivery? EGTs? How does it compare with other tunes you have used?

If all I did with EFI Live is simply load this tow tune into my truck, how much time does that typically take? Can this tune be tweaked for a particular truck, or is the tune locked?

My Edge EZ burnt out, so I'm considering Trippens Tow Tune as a replacement...

Thanks in advance...
Paul.

No LB7 here, but it only takes a minute or two to flash the tune into your truck's ecm. I'm not sure if the tune is locked but Guy is always willing to help his customers out and walk them through their tune. If it isn't locked you can change anything you want in the tune.:)

I have an LBZ tow tune which I love. Nice smooth power and a little gain in MPG. Also very very smooth. Truck runs like glass.

I used it on my LLY for a few months. Safe EGT's, safe for the tranny and a pretty smooth tune. If your going to buy EFILive from him, he gives you a tow tune with it.

Guy is also willing to help you make any other changes to the tune that will benefit your specific truck needs. He really stands behinds EFILive when it comes to helping out with the program and the tow tune.

Just that you'll wonder why it took you so long to get rid of the Edge EZ.;)

It will be night and day difference on the truck.

I have ran Guy's tow tune on my LB7 on and off. I always use when towing heavy loads. I recently towed 14,000 on Guy's tow tune and saw egt's up to 1250 on hard accel. very smooth tune and good power. Highly recomend Guy for EFILive.

As stated above call Guy! Great person to speak with on the phone and will do everything he knows possible to help you through whatever issues you might be having with EFILive. I got my EFILive from Guy almost 2 years ago and LOVE the power and smoothness of the tow tune which Guy provided with the purchase. I can't say enough great things about Guy since he just recently helped me revive my ECM after I did a full reflash and the flash failed 3/4 of the way through corupting all kinds of stuff that I didn't understand. (Called Guy in a panic and he had the truck back up and running in about 15 minutes.) Call him Phone (661) 775-5620 you won't be sorry.

Thanks for all the positive responses, which has confirmed my decision to go with EFI Live from Guy (must wait until Monday though). For those of you who suggested that I talk with Guy... I already did, shortly before opening this thread. :) You are all correct... he was very friendly, helpful, and answered all my questions. Still, it doesn't hurt to open up some free discussion, and let all the customers have an opportunity to voice their opinions. ;) ...which again, I am grateful for.

About 3 years ago, I bought an overhead guage mount (http://www.socaldiesel.com/Gauge.htm) from Guy (see installation picture in my garage). A bit pricey, but totally high quality, and every time I glance at it, I'm glad I purchased it, because it looks stock. Based on all the comments posted on this thread, I'm looking forward to experiencing smooth "stock like" power with my new tow tune as well. :D

Well guy's believe it or not I think the tow tune that Guy gave me with the purchase of EFI Live through him is actually more powerful than the banks six gun and diablosport preadator I used to have. Honsestly I feel like the banks six gun and preadator on the highest setting and even stacked together don't match the tow tune Guy sent me it shifts ten times smoother and EGT's never get over 1250 even at WOT and holding WOT. My hats off to Guy Tripp he has helped me with numberous question's Ive had and like other's have said no matter how long it takes he'll make sure he helps you with the problem at hand. I think Guy deserves an award for all his hard work.

The smoothest tune you will ever run. I have driven many different trucks with it and am very impressed.

The "reward" is all the business he gets (and deserves) because of his reputation, so you've already "rewarded" him... ;) I ordered my tow tune today. :D

On an LLY I got 22mph hand calculated, and as everyone else has said very smooth tune - probably smoother than stock. Even with a built trans and 71mm Cheetah my tow tune is based off of Guy's - not that there is much of his tuning left since I had to tune for 45% over injectors, the turbo, LBZ CP3 and more power since my trans can handle it - but that is still what I built the tune from.

Well, I got my EFI Live hardware/software, and Guy set me up with a tow tune (I wasn't aware that it was customized, using my OEM tune as a starting point). Guy was very quick in getting the tune done, and was helpful in answering my questions when I called. I got the tune installed, and took it for a 20 minute spin. Of course, the Allison transmission is still "learning" to deal with the new tune, but the shifts are still relatively smooth. :) Much smoother than during the "learning" curve with my Edge EZ, which involved some harsh shifts at first. :( Power seems very good, but the real test will come when I hook up my 5th-wheel, which I'm looking forward to. :D

X2 he did the same with mine, i got it back instantly.

Over 6 months later after buying his product, he was still right there to help me with the new verison. (dashboard issues going to new version of 7.4 to go to 7.5.

By far the best customer service I've seen yet.

very good tune
ive used it some if u want more give me ur email and i can tell how to adjust or simply make one more suitible for your situation.
but first i would need specs on truck and what exactly you do with it.
that way i could keep it safe for you.

My Allison has now completely "learned" the new tune, and the shifts have gone from smooth to very smooth. :) Still haven't tested it towing though...

My biggest power needs are when I go out West and tow in higher elevations (4000-8000ft), so Guy is in the process of writing a tune which factors in elevation/airpressure more precisely. Just a further refinement of an already great tune, and another example of Guy going the extra mile... I'm sure other "towers" who like to vacation on the Colorado Plateau (CO, UT, AZ) will also benefit from this enhancement. --Paul.

I like the tune for towing heavy loads and trying to save a few bucks on gas. Seems a little lacking on the bottem end at least in my truck...

Has anyone run Guy's tow tune on a dyno. I am going to go with a pair of gauges and a 4" cat back exhaust but I am curious what sort of numbers the tune puts down.

Also, how does it do for mileage unloaded. While I tow intermittently, my truck is empty most of the time and a tune that gained some hp but maximized mileage while empty is very appealing as well.

Thanks for the input.

On my 5 speed LLY I went from getting 18mpg completely stock to 21mpg with the tow tune - nothing else. Guy says it gets you between 50-75hp depending on LB7, LLY, LBZ, or LMM and what else you have done to the truck.

I'm back from a 3 week vacation, and have some comments about Trippens Tow Tune.

Before I left for vacation, Guy wrote a tune for me which took into account higher elevations, as I would be vacationing mostly through Colorado. My total combined (truck+5th-wheel) weight was about 20,000 lbs, and I travelled from Illinois thru Iowa, Nebraska opn I-80, across Colorado on I-70 into southestern Utah, down 550 into the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado, then back across I-70 and I-80 to get back home-- a total of about 5200 miles. I towed for probably about 4000 miles.

Shifting was very smooth. EGT's seemed to be better controlled than with my previous chip (Edge EZ), by about 50-100 degrees less in any given condition. I did not see any increase in MPG-- I still got about 10 MPG when towing. Power was very good in the steep mountains. What I typically do on the long, steep ascents is go as fast as (safely) possible while keeping the EGT's at/below about 1300 degrees-- so the following comments are based on these personal parameters that I am comfortable with (i.e. I could have gone faster, but EGTs may have climbed to 1400 or higher). The worst case scenario was ascending to Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass on I-70 in Colorado. I could typically maintain 50 MPH with 1300 EGT's on these ascents, dipping down to about 47 MPH on a few stretches. Smaller cars typically joined me at these speeds, whereas the big rigs were typically crawling between 20-30 MPH, and some stronger (solo) vehicles ascended at 60-65 MPH. All in all, hauling 20k at 50 MPH for 10-15 minutes stretches across some of the harshest passes in America is very good. :) I could ascend most of the lesser hills/mountains at 70-75 MPH, but on occasion I would have to dip down into the 60's, usually when cresting a steep hill, and then speed back up into the 70's on the downside. Nothing to really slow me down by any significant amount.

Negatives? Well... not really, but let's just say there is room for improvement, so that a great tune could be made even greater. Let me explain... When running the stock tune, or the Edge EZ, turning on the tow mode would result in higher RPMs at any given speed. The effect upon towing was not as much "lugging down" in the lower RPM range. However, with my new tune, switching on tow mode did not seem to have any effect-- apparently, the new tune does not check the tow mode and compensate accordingly, but it would be nice if it did, and here's why... The sweet spot of power is about 2150-2300 RPMs in 5th gear... above 2300 RPMs is ok, but the engine tends to be revving loud, and below 2150 RPMs, the truck can easily start loosing RPMs and more easily "lug down" on a hill, resulting in a downshift. With tow mode effectually disabled, the 2150-2300 RPM range is achieved at a speed of 75-80 MPH in 5th gear, and at a speed of 55-60 MPH in 4th gear. So if you are in these speed ranges, all is well. But say you want to go 65-70 MPH? You are either lugging in 5th gear, or revving in 4th gear. This is where it would be nice to turn on the tow mode, and have it cover that range effectively in 5th gear.

I'm assuming that it is possible with EFI Live to detect if tow mode is on/off, and adjust parameters accordingly. For all practical purposes, tow mode could have nothing to do with "towing" at all!-- it could just be a button which could be used to effectively turn on an alternate EFI Live tune (i.e. a built in toggle switch). So "off" could be a econo tune, and "on" could be a race tune. Or... whatever. And it's all stock.

But even without this additional feature, I'm very pleased with my tow tune from Trippen, and would recommend his tunes to anyone.
