I got a 1997 Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel and i got very little power. I haul tractors around and it doesn't have anything except alot of black smoke. People have told me it could be my waste gate actuator or a vacuum hose that could be pinched or junk. The Service engine soon light is on to. I have replaced the Air and Fuel Filters and have noticed a little improvement.

What do you think is the problem?

:( Ya got little or no boost. This is BAD, VERY BAD. :(
Fix it NOW... The engine you save will be your own.

Read the Stickys - Especially pertaining to the turbo charger and vacuum system. Its actually easy to troubleshoot :). And most times fairly easy to fix. Unless the turbo is dead, in which case its still easy to fix, just expensive.

The black smoke is unburnt fuel - this causes HIGH EGT (exhaust gas temperature). High EGT causes your engine to blow. Well -- Maybe just melt. Seriously:badidea: !

Let us know what you find and someone will most likely tell you how to fix it.

Thanks for the Reply, i talked to the mechanic and he said that it is a simple fix and he has a part there for it, so i just took it there. I would like to work on it my self but time has been hard to come by lately.

Thanks For The Help!

Ok, i got my truck back and the person who worked on it said it was a stupid piece of plastic the Wastegate Solenoid, now it has tons of power and no smoke. He said it is a very common problem.

Thanks For the Help!

I'm currious what he charged you for the part and labor. I got rid of mine w/ a heath turbo master/wastegate controller for $132 shipping included and 20 minutes of work. Now I have more power and better fuel economy.

Lucky dog...I installed a turbo master...have power once it gets up to speed...but anytime I give it fuel, just a hint of acceleration and smoke pours out until I get to the power band...grrr

ICTD, you have an "S" engine with an EGR valve. You likely have a malfunction in the EGR system. If not then you dont have enough boost or you have a leak. Im guessing an EGR problem tho.
