Engine model..

LB7 = January something 2004 and earlier
LLY = January something 2004 and recent

Basically the same engine, just different turbo, injector location, emissions stuff, and other technical things. For us, all we need to know is that there are more goodies for the LB7 and it is claimed to get much better mileage than the LLY. LLY has a new VVT turbo which is showing much promise, and goodies are still being developed for it.

So it will be some time until the LLY catches up or beats the LB7

IMO, the LB7 is a better engine... I'm on my second LB7 with no problems.

Ive have the LB7 and test drove the LLY in the same body as my truck. IMO there wasnt much difference in the motors in their stock form. The LLY however is quieter (hard to believe).

In adition to the above , I think you can change the injectors on the the LLY without taking the valve covers off.
