I just picked up a spin on filter from NAPA ($9). Do you think this will do as good of a job as a GM one? It's whilte instead of red.

It was actually part # 7101? Did I get the wrong one? I just posted a question on the Allison forum.

I get Allison brand filters for under $8, straight from an Allison dealer that's near where I work. I haven't been able to find anyone beat that price for an OEM part, or an aftermarket one for that matter.

The problem I found with the wix filter is, the magnet that lays on top, covers the holes.

Doesn't actually cover the holes, just sits over the top of them. The center of the filter is tapered up and when the magnet is put on top it looks as if it blocks them from the top. When viewed from the side there is some clearance, although not much. You do also get 2 more holes with the wix filter.

I've had the Baldwin filter which has the similiar design that you mentioned with the Wix. In almost 42,000 i've never had any issues, high temps or concerns with the holes being 'covered up'. I started buying the Allison from from a local dealer since it's on the way home from work, but I wouldn't hesitate to keep using it.

Someone posted a servcie bullitin on this site that said there were pressure issues with the baldwin and wix after market filters on the 1000 series Allison transmissions and they recommend not to use them. It was from Allison/GM.

On a side note we use Wix and Baldwin filters on all our big trucks and never a problem.

To the best of my knowledge SPX FILTRAN (one of the major world leaders in OEM filters) is the OEM manufacture of Allison spin-on and sump filter.
Allison spin-on: red in color, part # 29539579 has (6) .486 dia holes for a flow area of 1.112" sq. Has Allison trademark, "made in U.S.A."

SPX also manufactures an aftermarket version. Since proprietary reasons it cannnot be identical to the OEM Allison. This filter is white in color, with SPX FILTRAN on the filter #75T759, MFG in USA. (8) holes, .566 dia. for a total flow area of 2.011 " sq. The holes are closer to center than the OEM. With the magnet in place it does obscure the holes to ones vision, but because of the taper DOES NOT restrict flow.So actually the SPX aftermarket has larger inlet area than the Allison oem.

I have seen a BALDWIN filter come out of the box as a geniune Allison filter.???

WIX I know is a quality filter mfg. however I have no personal experience, so I can't speak about their Allison spin-on.

I have seen a spin-on filter that is red in color, it is a counterfeit copy of the OE Allison. It is made in China by God only knows. TRASH IT!

I will use the geniune Allison or the SPX filter, which one does not matter. Either one will be the correct filter for your trans. Are there some others just as good? Could be, but the cost/energy vs. trans cost does not qualify for discussion or consideration.
