What is the purpose of the grill cover?

I live west of Detroit, have a 50 mile 1 way commute. What will using the grill cover do for performance/protection of my vehicle? Also, is it necessary to use the block heater on those cold nights? I have not used it yet.

The cold-front cover keeps engine temps in the 190-195 degF (normal) range when ambient temps are in the 30's and lower. I also notice that mileage drops a little without the cover in cold weather.

Block heater helps when temps are 20deg F and below. It reduces white smoke (un-burnt fuel) and rattle on start-up. The block heater doesn't warm the oil (very much), just the head and coolant. A good 5w-40 oil will help crank speed in cold temps.
