: gas in my diesel ooops!
jdjensenmia 03-01-2005, 06:05 AM this morning i accidently put about 3/4 of a gallons of gas :eek:in my duramax tank . It was extremely low (low range on the D IC indicator) should i Fill it with diesel now or empty the tank being it's so low and start new replace fuel filter. what are the best/worst case senarios in this situation? any other suggestions?:help2: thanks john
I don't think 0.75 gallon of gas would do any harm in a 26 or more gallon tank. Mercedes used to actually advise to add some gasoline to diesel to cure gelling in very cold weather.
I would fill it up the rest of the way with diesel and drive.
jdjensenmia 03-01-2005, 07:00 AM i only have about 2.5 gallons of diesel in the tank now plus th e3/4 gal of unleaded
skoryaro2 03-01-2005, 08:27 AM There's been previous discussion here that indicated you should'nt have any problems if you just filled it up with diesel and drove it clean.
jdjensenmia 03-01-2005, 09:20 AM thanks the diesel mech at work said just filler up w/ diesel too & it 'll run like a scalded dog untill its all run out.
WilliamBos 03-01-2005, 10:47 AM Hi,
VW used to recommend running 30% gas to diesel in the winter months. It also helped the car warm up to temperature quicker!!
Keep us posted. Hopefully you will be ok!!
Take care
Will
duramaximizer 03-01-2005, 03:13 PM one of the people in my town just got a new lly about 6 months ago and filled it completely up with gas. they towed it a couple mile to drain it out. not a good idea but but if you top it off with diesel i don't think 3/4 of a gallion would hurt but i would not want to run 50/50 to the fuel station. i would drain it first.
specialagentPK 03-02-2005, 02:04 PM the only roblem is is that if the truck is left sitting the gas and diesel will start to seperate and the last thinh u want is to get a straight shot of gas into the engine
HD-Nate 03-02-2005, 04:55 PM Did the same thing, put about 1 gallon in, filled rest up with #2.
No problems the entire trip and I was towing about 9,000 lbs at the time.

Lennox69 03-02-2005, 09:28 PM my friend did this with five gallons of gas and i told him to put 2 stroke oil in the tank and nothing happend, everything was ok
OneSilverTruck 03-02-2005, 09:38 PM Back in August, I filled up, 22 + gallons of gas......Drove it 2 or so miles, it died, towed, drained the tank and lines to the tune of $700 + bucks....
snowpeke 03-03-2005, 07:53 PM A friend of mine bought a new dodge diesel and he drove it home and it died. The car dealer helper filled it up with gas! They told him that they would fix it but he said later and after a lot of hassling he got out of the deal.
cougarjohn 03-05-2005, 10:38 PM I put a couple of gallons of gasoline in my truck several years ago before I caught the mistake (smelled the vapors). I filled the tank with diesel, drove about 400 yards to a WalMart, bought a can of outboard engine lube, and poured it in the tank.
In the summer time I will put in a can of outboard engine lube every so often. I use the ashless type.
DuramaxBoy 03-13-2005, 10:02 AM Well you figure that Diesel is just higher octaine Gasoline, It'll be fine. It would be like Filling a mustang up with 89 on one tank, then At halfway filling er up with 92 or higher. You'd end up with a mixutre of 90ish
dmax4u2nv 03-14-2005, 05:16 AM diesel fuel has nothing to do with octane, its cetane. octane is the ability to resist knocking, more or less, not sure what cetane measures.
RichLube 03-14-2005, 06:35 AM Cetane measures the fuel's ability to ignite under compression. The higher the cetane number the easier the fuel ignites.
RichLube 03-14-2005, 06:50 AM As Williambos wrote earlier in this thread, VW allowed a percentage of gasoline to be added to diesel fuel to aid cold weather perfofmance. That recommendation was probably 35 years ago. I believe one reason the practice was discontinued was that the combined vapors during refueling could be more explosive than either vapor alone. Also the gasoline formulation is much different today. In Connecticut ethanol (alcohol)
is added to gas from Nov. thru March. However, I would think you are OK.
hdmax 03-14-2005, 10:23 AM i only have about 2.5 gallons of diesel in the tank now plus th e3/4 gal of unleaded If you filled the tank the rest of the way full with diesel you would be fine, as the percentage would be so low. But with the 2.5 to .75 ratio, you could end up stranded pretty quickly.
hdmax 03-14-2005, 10:26 AM Well you figure that Diesel is just higher octaine Gasoline, It'll be fine. It would be like Filling a mustang up with 89 on one tank, then At halfway filling er up with 92 or higher. You'd end up with a mixutre of 90ish You are completely wrong! These diesel trucks are not multi fuel engines. Gas in one of these diesels will ruin the engine pretty quickly. If what you are saying was even close too be correct, we could run 100% gasoline any time we wanted too. And at the current price difference, everyone would be running gas instead of diesel.
drywaller 03-14-2005, 11:38 PM I drive fuel truck for a living here in Cali. You guys would scream if you knew how much fuel gets mixed, diesel with gas, 87 with 91 and so on. The amounts vary. Not usually more than five gallons to a 7500 gallon load of diesel, and vise versa.
One would never notice this amount but makes a guy wonder. I have actually sen station owners order more 87 unl. than their storage tanks could hold then have us put the rest in the midgrade or premium hole.
Anyway, one or two gallons in a 26 gallon tank is harmless. Just make sure you empty that tank full before you make that mistake again.
Just my 02' cents (LB7)
Pro400exc 03-15-2005, 12:02 PM Thats a Buncha BS...I always knew that alotof times your paying for 93 but the cheapass owners water it down w/ mid or low grade fuel...
Geez...
