: Still smoking.....

Pulled the boat about 90 miles to the lake the other day and the boats one side is a black mess. You can see the black smoke when your just cruising down the road. Under accelleration it smokes real bad(black cloud). The pilot injection is also quite noisey.

I have cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the air filter, blocked the EGR, checked for injector harness rub, and I just got back from the mechanic and he said the balence rates on the injectors looked good. The only code that was in question was one about the eprom chip or something. He wasn't sure what that was. If I get the code # can I look somewhere to see what it means?

I bought this truck used so I am not sure what the engine has had done. Can I take it somewhere to see if the computer has been reflashed or if it is still stock? Right know I am only getting about 12-14 mpg. Do I need to take it to a dealer to have them check it?

Thanks......

Well I took it in to the dealer and had them check it with their scan tool. The only codes were from the Egr system because I have a blocker plate in and it is unhooked. The highest number as far as balance rates was #6 at 2.8-3.0. So everything looks good there.

I am not sure what to do from here. Would the fuel filter have anything to do with it?

The only question I have is wether it has the stock program in it. I bought this used so the person before could have programed it and I wouldn't know. Should I have the dealer reflash the computer to make sure it is stock? Only got 9 mpg on the last tank of fuel with the camper and boat. Driving between 60-65mph. No big uphills just small ups and downs.

I would have it reflashed although you will lose the tune (if it has one) I would think it does have a program, but not knowing if its a good tow tune is the problem a high HP tune will hurt your stock trans.

Had the reflash done. Still smoking.. The #6 injector is bad even tho the balance rates were good. It was the worst of all of them. It should be fixed tomorrow. Hopefully it will be good to go. Costs 700.00 to replace the injector at the stealer. Am I getting hosed????

I don't think it is covered. 120,000 miles on the truck. Just my luck..

With this reflash should I know have a fuel filter life on my DIC???

I dont know anything about the dealer cost of injector replacement but $700??? Doesnt that sound high guys for replacing one injector? What does the part retail for? Maybe a GM tech can chime in here.

Did the new injector do the trick? no more constant soot?

Replaced the #6 injector....no more smoke....maybe a small amount on hard accelleration.

now I think I have a left front wheel bearing going out.....

In the words of Rosanne Rosanna-Danna... "It's always sometin"

Actually something like this is precisely how I ended up with my truck. Last year, I had an '02 Avalanche I dearly loved. But the previous year the thing ate a thrust bearing in the rear end which cost me about $600, last year it ate a rear axle bearing which ate the axle... that plus a brake job et al cost me nearly $1400. Once the rear end was quiet, I could hear the transfer case making noises. That was the last straw... and what led me to find my current truck.
