: Ouch! Cracks in windshield. Bug Deflectors helpful?

While traveling through Eastern TX last week, three different trucks ( 1 TT and 2 PU's), on three different occasions threw up rocks that cracked my windshield. One truck threw up two at once and, within a hundred miles of each other, my windshield suddenly looks like %#@*.......let's just say it looks bad! Got a ding in the leading edge of the hood too!

I've had bug shields in the past and never had this problem before. Are they really that helpful or is it just coincidence?

the bug shield would have saved the ding on the hood perhaps...but it wouldn't have helped the w/s chips. I guess the theory behind it is to help get the airflow up and over the cab...which would keep the bugs off the w/s, but it ain't gonna do s__t with a stone/rock traveling at 60.

NO.

Bug deflectors will help save you hood but will do little or nothing for the windshield.

I don't see how a bug deflector is going to prevent a 00 sized rock from impacting the windshield.

I have a purty crack and a couple pit marks on the windshield from the alcan, as well as just driving around up here in the last frontier. I figure I'll replace it once it gets worse, since it's going to get jacked up anyway.

bug deflectors keep bugs off of the front few inches of the hood, and also redirect the ones that would splat around the wipers up into the viewing area much better. i tried several one previous trucks and will never own again. the cause too much vibration in mirrors, noise like whistling, etc. :( i would much rather have to clean the hood

I installed a Lund bug deflector on my ride about 2 minutes after I bought it. I'm in the process of changing the windshield for the 3rd time. They actually don't do much for bugs on the windscreen either but they do protect the paint on the front of the hood. Last rock that cracked the windshield sounded like a bullet!!!!

They don't protect all of the hood. I've got a nice ding and scratch about 4in ahead of the drivers hood hinge, and what ever it was bounced off the hood and left a bruise on the windshield:cussing: ! Musta just missed the deflector.

do you guys think that the glass for the windshields are getting thinner to allow them to craack easier?

No, traffic is just driving faster which in turn throws the rocks harder.
They are called bug delfectors not rock deflectors for a reason. I have them on my vehicle for the hood only. I don't get any vibration or wind noise by having it on. Some rocks do get by the deflector onto the hood but that is due to the rocks being thown upwards and then coming down and not in a straight line towards the vehicle.

Thanks all! Didn't think it would help with rocks. Must have been just coincidence that I haven't had any windshield problems before and got blasted 3 times in 100 miles. Maybe the TX rocks are trained to attack trucks with NY tags! :-)
