I have a 2005 Sierra 3500 SLt Ext, Cab SRW D/A truck that is only 2 weeks old. I want to install a set of Kodiak Sidewinder steps and ned to know if they can be wired to the door switch instead of the huge plunger switch they give you. I want a clean install and just need to know what wire to tap off of. Kodiak technical help said any grounded switch will work. I was trying to find the switch that activates the door courtasy lamps.

Thanks for your help. specifics on wire color and/or location wold be appreciated.

Jim.

Ok, here it goes... I recently installed a set of four Kodiak steps on an 04 crew cab. My customer also did not want the provided plungers used. He wanted all four steps to come down with the factory unlock button on the remote, and go back up when the doors are closed. I wanted to use the dome lamps as the trigger for my relay, but they are controlled by serial data communications between the door modules and the BCM. They are not just a simple ground circuit any more. Neither are the door ajar switches in the latches, they are now serial data inputs to various modules. I figured I would just use the dome lamps power supply to trigger a relay (a relay providing a ground instead of power when activated) I ran into a problem with this idea too, as the dome lamps have a feature called "theatre dimming" This would not be a good relay trigger, as it would cause the relay to have a short life. After careful inspection of the truck, I noticed that the courtesy lamps in the door panels did not follow the "theatre dimming" function, they go on and off normally. So I removed the drivers door panel and tapped into the power wire at the courtesy lamp bulb, and ran it through the main grommet into the cab, and connected it to a relay. This relay used that power as it's trigger, and the source and coil were ran to ground, which means the output is a ground signal when the relay is triggered. I then ran this to the Kodiak harness that I had routed under the hood. I also put a toggle switch on the wire coming out of the door panel so the steps could have an "override" feature, if desired. (They can hit the rack during service, and can be shut off if your ol' lady wants the dome light on so she can put on makeup, etc...) I hope this helps, and it worked really well, it looked really cool to see all of the steps come down when you hit the unlock button... lots of ooohs and aahhs fore sure.

That's the ticket. This is exactly what I want. Thanks Max Payne.
