: Hey Suncoast guys!!!!
DMAX POWER007 02-28-2005, 11:25 PM I want a bulletproof Alli. I put lots of miles on my truck each year. @50,000 per year. I at least want to be able to run Hot OJ without fear. But I want reliable smoothe shifting to stand the test of time. Which Suncoast build do you guys recommend? I'm thinking 3 or 4.
Any thoughts?
moss022 02-28-2005, 11:30 PM if you can afford it get the 5, because after you find out how it feels, that edge wont be enough

DMAX POWER007 02-28-2005, 11:59 PM I've got an advantage on you guys, Suncoast is only about a 4 hour ride from me. I could go down and get mine same day if I wanted. (stage 5) No waiting for me if I choose.):h
GMC-2002-Dmax 03-01-2005, 01:59 AM I have the SC-III...........it has held up fine for 13K miles.........
I am happy with the shifts and it has not limped, slipped.....nothing since the rebuild..........
As dmaxallitech says, buy whatever you can afford........even if it is more then you need............it will be there if you change your mind and up the HP..........

dmaxalliTech 03-01-2005, 08:27 AM The V is the same as a SC IV in kit form, I am sure that Joe is done with the billet pistons in these as they are quirky and havent shown to gain much. You are gaining the warranty with a unit built inhouse, but for those not going to them directly, a SC IV is the same thing.
Max Payne 03-01-2005, 08:46 AM I also did the 5, would have done the 3 myself but I am "Transmission Challenged" so I went for the 5 and the warranty. I would do it again.
blnagel 03-01-2005, 10:59 AM I have the level 3 and LOVE it. I was losing alot of power to the rear wheels. Would I do it over? YES. I was singing Little Orphan Annie songs the day before I picked it up. (Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya tomorrow ect.)

What are your slip %'s when the TC is unlocked while aggressively accelerating? How does that compare to Level 4 builds? I read between 40-50% unlocked (stock alli) on level 4 and low boost most aggressive. Just wanted to compare stock numbers to stage 3 to stage 4.
Thanks!
GMC-2002-Dmax 03-01-2005, 11:57 AM TC slip is TC slip..........as long as the TC is unlocked it will show slip.......

Tell me about this. I'm new to this transmission build thing. SC seems to be the way to go for the money & quality.
ratlover 03-01-2005, 01:00 PM SC can get you a converter thats a bit loser or tighter depending what you have, want, need. Dont ask Joe to do your install but use a TTS converter unless you want to piss him off(not saying TTS is bad or good). If you dont ask Joe about options in converters you will probably just get his regular unit. You may want this or maybe not.
If possible try to get a ride in trucks with different trans and converters. That way you get a good feel for what trans you like and what converter. Remember programing will make a truck act much different. A stock truck with a SC off the shelf converter will have a converter that feels tighter at mid throttle than a truck with a extreme and the same converter/trans. Also some programs defule differently and this will change the feel.

I'm looking for something to handle Hot OJ and possibly a good stack later on. I want the truck to operate smoothly since I drive this truck daily. 50,000 miles per year.

Without starting a pissing match on converters......again:damnit1: , I'll say that no matter the claims made, Brandons converter in his truck for two years shown very little difference in the TTS and the current model 3D that Joe offers. I will not take any thing away from the TTS or the SC or whatever, but they both work very well.
You can tell Joe what you want in your truck/trans and your intended use and he is good at making a converter that will work well with your needs. You could probably watch it being made if your really wanted too. Your not gonna go wrong with any converter from the "big 3" and compared to stock, all will give you a 100% better feel.

I'm pretty sure those rules you refer to say something about cutting open a competitors converter, calling it worthless on this board and then putting it on display at his open house......but I could be wrong. :D
Brandon's truck runs hard, there is no doubt, and I would never presume to doubt his experiences or accomplishments. :ro)
I just thought the newbie should ask for the "newer" converters Joe is building with the new and improved "torque multiplication", in order to get the best value for his hard earned dollar.
And I wanted to stir the pot. :D

So this is a new and improved Suncoast converter??
fredw 03-01-2005, 08:33 PM trippin:
i ran both tq converters suncoast sells and from what i can tell and the gtech shows, their is not much cange if any on the two, just as joe exsplaned over the pnone, i think this is becomming a much bigger (joke) than it should be. if i did it again, i would of stayed with the first one, and saved the shiping, as eric says, all 3 make a good one

So Joe re-did a converter for you recently?
BMDMAX 03-01-2005, 08:58 PM Guy,
Fred went from a Stage II kit to a Stage IV and got a new converter at the same time.
Suncoast will build whatever converter you want. I wanted a very responsive converter two years ago and got it. It has been flawless and withstood the all the flogging. Launches great out of the hole in my truck. Just my opinion in the great TC debate. :D

and the box say 1053-3dt is this the newest design or the old?
i was told it is the only one they sell now.not trying to start any bs just wondering. thanx,

dmaxalliTech 03-01-2005, 10:22 PM the 3D is the same conv that Brandon, Fred and I all have..
I was not aware its the only one avail though.

I was not aware its the only one avail though.they show 2 parts#'s 1050-3d 1053-3d so i asked joe the difference he said he need to take the 1050 off the site because he is only selling the 1053 now.so i guess it is the lastest.:blahblah:
tophog 03-01-2005, 10:43 PM Tomorrow is Christmas re-lived :) Hmmm, now that I think about it I didn't get much for Christmas :(
Got a call from the installer ... big package from Florida arrived this afternoon with my name on it. Washed/scrubbed and prepped truck for 7:30 AM surgery ('SunCoastectomy'). Should get her back tomorrow evening or Thurs morning depending how busy the shop is. She wasn't scheduled until Thurs but they think they can :grd: tomorrow.
On a serious note, is there any break-in recommended for the new tranny? I was suppose to tow this weekend but thought that may be too soon? I'm actually torturing myself ...removed my 90 juice Monday and planning to drive stock for awhile ...until the Extreme arrives.
charles hays 03-01-2005, 10:48 PM the 3D is the same conv that Brandon, Fred and I all have..

have heard several different stories just wondering.i hope i went
the right way.:ro)
chays
dmaxalliTech 03-01-2005, 10:56 PM the 1050 is a single disk, the 1053 is the triple disk if not mistaken
Chays, the SC and the big VA dont always play nice togather.. Working on that though with some intervention
tophog, put the juice back on so you dont have withdrawal.

GMC-2002-Dmax 03-02-2005, 08:09 AM Just so I understand everything.............Joe is making a new converter and it has the feeling of the STOCK TC for torque multiplication..........:thumb: ......didn't I read in another thread that he would redo anyones converter if they wanted a more responsive one ??????? :cool2:
I just want to know, because I may pull mine out at some point in the very near future for some "OTHER" tweaks................:exactly: ............. and it would be the perfect time to would swap out to a different TC.............
Of coarse I would be more than happy to pay the freight both ways.........as it would be my choice to change from what I have.........I wish I knew I could have had a custom TC made when I got my KIT in July..........
Hopefully Joe chimes in here and explains if that is what he meant in the other thread..............unless i mis-understood the post........
Thanks,
T;) NY
dmaxalliTech 03-02-2005, 08:44 AM Tony, Joe will be more then happy to do that from the conversations I have had, I think they can do it fairly quick so down time will be mostly the shipping both ways.
ratlover 03-02-2005, 10:17 AM With the converter locking most of the time at WOT I dont see a tight or lose converter being much of a difference in the 1/4. I just wish I could get my converter to LU sooner
Is Joe making differnt part #'s for a "lose" or "tight" design?
I too wish I would have known Joe could make me a tighter or loser converter if I would have asked. But I dont see it changing my WOT performance so it aint worth me changing out and being out a truck for a bit and shipping a converter to him and back to me and eating the cost of a bunch of mobil 1 fluid.
I also dont know if the "tighter" SC converter that is a "copy" of the TTS converter is better or worse than the TTS unit.
The big VA didnt play well at all with my SC. Actually ran 3-4 tenths slower with the big VA than my HJ because it was F ing up the shift so bad. If you would like to see how well my truck played with the big VA you could take a look at the vids from byron. I have the big black truck and if you hear it bouncing off the limiter going down the track then you are watching my passes with the big VA. You results may vary......
Trippin 03-02-2005, 02:17 PM Rat,
Your right, no difference in WOT locked converter. I can't tell you that the better torque multiplication improved or hindered my 1/4 mile times. What I can tell you is it made my very heavy truck feel like it had an additional 50 ftlbs of torque when I drive the thing around town. I think it is definitely more noticable, in heavier vehicles.
Theoretically it would also follow along that in 1st and 2nd gear at the drag strip before the converter is locked we should see some sort of difference, this difference could manifest itself as wheel spin:( which obviously will hurt our 1/4 mile times.
In the end it is all SOTP, which I did as a blind test not knowing anything had been changed in my truck. I was convinced after two weeks and ponied up the money for the converter.
Mike L. 03-02-2005, 10:32 PM Guy

your way too fast to get down on your truck man....as long as there are problems there will be solutions ):h
gmccall 03-09-2005, 08:53 AM Ultimately here, keep in mind that a Suncoast III is/was only good for about 450 +- RW hp. I know for a fact.
I reccommend the Suncoast IV, or even better V with all the warranty you can get. If money is a big factor, then you need to stay with a 125-150 hp box, and fewer Allison upgrades.

I wonder what smoop is gonna say ??????????
T:help: NY
dmaxalliTech 03-09-2005, 10:10 AM I know that Joe likes to keep the ratings lower but thats just being smart. If you know you are gonna go and make 700 rwhp and didnt get a full competition level upgrade, shame on you. Like Tony said, I wouldnt feel skeptical about throwing 600+ rwhp at a III at all, but If I had plans on doing so, I would have bought the IV in the first place. When you compare the two, there is only about $6-700 difference. Thats small compared to doing it twice. Its a bit more if you opt for the complete trans.
a bear 03-09-2005, 10:11 PM Is there any information as to the HP/Torque handling of the Level IV? About how much can be gained over the level III? I don't expect anyone would have the exact numbers but a close guestimate would help to make a decision. 6 to 7 hundred dollars isn't really much for a reasonable gain.
